Just curious.
Why is it that the FAA wants you to enter these maneuvers on the downwind? Just curious on the logic behind this.

Think about how these maneuvers work. Where in, say, turns around a point, is your bank angle the steepest? The FAA just wants you to start with the steepest bank you'll need to complete the maneuver, not start with, say 45° and then have to increase it while flying 800-1000' above the ground.

Secondary reason? The ground reference maneuvers simulate things that you might be called on to do in the traffic pattern, and the entry into a standard traffic pattern is on the downwind.

I think it's a conspiracy of some sort.
Michael Moore made a film short on it, in which he attempted to show Haliburton was responsible because they stood to profit from in it some obscure way. He did this by showing clips of Wildebeasts mating.
