Well what I was taught would be to lean the mixture out until the engine gets rough. Then you would turn the knob rich three twists, that means that you move your hand three twisting motions, not three 360 degree turnds. In Cessnas this should be good enough w/o any FF or EGT gages.

Every manufacturer has a specific procedure for best economy and best power......the best economy settings are the ones that give you the lowest fuel flows......

in the piper warriors, you set the mixture and throttle full forward and then lean the mixture until you get the desired RPM from the charts in the POH......

I'm sure other manufacturers have similar procedures printed in their manuals.....
 
Check the POH....probably lean until roughness then enrichen one turn???
 
just makes sure not too lean it too much, as soon as you feel the engine getting rough richen as nesessary
 
Or too lean that the engine stops all together........
 
Only happened once, after landing, turning off the active and leaning the mixture for taxi....luckily my CFI caught in time before the engine quit.
