How do you airline/guard guys work picking up man days into your regional schedule? If something pops up at your unit the next day, do you tell your airline scheduler you need off? Is this ever a problem?

I'm just starting in the guard and work the ramp at a regional so I'm curious...

Thanks

It sort of depends on your airline and their mil leave policy. I try to give as much notice as possible. If you have a short notice duty pop up, they can't deny you mil leave. If you make a habit of it, they'll probably get tired of it. After all, they still are going to have to call someone out for the duty you drop - so more notice is better.

I don't know what your guard duty schedule is like. I think most guard pilots have the ability to plan most stuff at least a week in advance (especially drill).

I think we need to give 48hrs notice for military for the computer to take it. Shorter than that a call to the ACP is probably required.

Your a ramper, so I don't really know how many days off a month you get. Usually, for pilots with (14-15 days off), you get your line and either try to work your days in whenever, or drop trips to fly for the guard. Your unit usually avoid short notice stuff unless you are classified as a trougher(reserve), or Bum(guard).

General rule- More notice the better. Let your employer know your required days off so they can schedule around it.

Like most Guard/Reserve folks, I try to work my Reserve duty into my days off and when taking mil leave give as much notice as possible. Sometimes that's not possible. During hurricane season we often have very short notice and if I'm already at the squadron I might end up spending a week or so more than I thought I would. In cases like that I call/fax paperwork to the chief pilot's office and it goes up the ladder from there. Whenever I take mil leave I send orders for active duty and for inactive duty, i.e. UTAs or AFTPs, a letter from my supervisor, scheduler, or commander suffices. Regardless, your employer has to give you the time to perform military duty. It is the law.

ASA has always been stellar about mil leave, BTW. Never any hassle, never any questions.
