Hey I'm a newhire at a regional. I'm thinking I'll commute and get a crash pad. Have a few questions for those who have been through this...

1) Do you recommend leaving your car at "home" or take it to where you'll be assigned and take public transportation?

2) Is there a company paid employee parking? (Only at your base or it's good for your home town?)

Thanks a lot for your responses!!!

Hi,

1. It depends on what city you will be based at. Personally I would rather use public transportation than worry about having another car and insuring it. However, if you will be on RSV for any significant amount of time it may be helpful. It would be nice to have if you don't live within walking distance to a supermarket, gym, etc.

2. Most companies only pay for parking at your base, not where you reside. I have been lucky being able to park at the hotel where we overnight a few miles from my house and leave my car with them. I then hop on their shuttle van to the airport.

Hope this helps a little!

as far as having your car, as the above said, it depends on where your base is. having a car of your own at your crashpad gives you so much freedom and mobility, something you'd be surprised you miss when that mobility is not available. however, if you're in a place like chicago, and your crash pad is in the city, you can get pretty much anywhere you want to go on the cta. if you're based in juneau alaska, probaby would want your own mode of transportation.. ya get the picture.

parking away from your domicile is pretty much up to you, usually. check with your company, they may reimburse you, may not, all depends on your company's rules and stance on the issue.

I got in with TSA, bases are either RIC or STL. Don't know what kind of public transportation, if any, is available at those locations.

Thanks for your help!!!

don't know about richmond, but st. louis isn't the best out there.. although, they do have the metrolink drive straight into the airport.. just have to figure out how to get from your crashpad to the train station.

STL has many crashpads that are within walking distance of the terminal IIRC. Maybe not in the winter though... Also, they are not in the best of neighborhoods....but then again, that goes for most of STL....

If you home is a company base, maybe they can get you an employee parking pass. Some airports offer special rates, I think a friend of mine pays like 30 bucks a month at LAX or something like that.
