Okay, so I've only got about 30 hours in the type now, but our machine is(sadly, in my opinion) equipped with Universal FMS. My question is this:

Concerning sequencing to approach mode, using LHDG when and how should you properly set up the FMS to switch to the LOC on it's own. If I've selected an approach to a runway with a particular transition and am in LHDG, why won't my FMS switch automatically. It propogates a ghost needle on the LOC and it will tune the course properly, but that's as far as it gets.

Also,
FMS 1 has the option on the NAV page to "ACT APPR", but FMS 2 never displays that option, even if they're set up identically.

HELP!

Which airplane and which UNS-1? While "most" UNS-1's work the same, there are some differences depending upon aircraft specific installations.

Typically, the "ACT APPR" on the FMS is to manually activate a white-source approach, in the event the FMS did not automatially arm and activate on it's own. This would typically be the case if you're inside of 30 nm of the IAF.

For a green source approach: ILS/LOC you would activate the appr mode from the fligtht guidance panel, unless of course your aircraft is set up to do those approched in white source. Again, we need more information.

Without sitting in front of the FMS I am at a loss why the #2 FMS does not display that function. Again, it could be because of a specific aircraft installation.

Not all will automatically sequence to green-source for ILS/LOC.

"Sadly"?

What FMS were you using in your previous aircraft? IMHO, the Universal is a very capable, user-friendly box.

I'll second that. Universal makes a very easy to use and functional box.

My understanding is that some units are programmed to be capable of this intercept, and some are not.

The theory is probably that they don't want you to try to do an ILS or LOC approach on the FMS, since it isn't certified for those approaches. They want you to have only the actual ILS or LOC on your HSI.

Fly safe!

David

P.S. More info is probably available in the UNS-1 manual and/or flight manual supplement.

Well, I'm a collins man. So that explains my disdain for the universal. I miss scratch pads and line-selecting.
This is on an Astra SPX.

I understand that the concept is for the FMS to switch to land-based equipment on its own for the approach, but ours will not do it. Thinking back I think now it's because the APPR mode was not selected on the FCP(or MCP) In the collins we wouldn't do that until cleared for the approach. But in the universal I guess you have to. I think I just jogged my own memory.

Now, that still doesn't explain why FMS 2 will no get geared up for an approach. Thoughts on that?

Astra SPX, eh? The ProLine 4 w/Universals is a GREAT setup. It should do all the work for you. I'm guessing the problem is pilot related. I should know, I've pressed every wrong button at least once.;)

In our new plane we have dual Collins FMS 6100's with a UNS-1C+ as a 3rd FMS. I LOVE the scratchpads but the UNS still beats the Collins in a few areas (loading airways, for example).

PM me with your e-mail address and I will send you the training aides and approach setup checklists that I developed for the Collins Proline 4 / UNS-1C. I helped train the FlightSafety guys and know my way around Astra SPX/G-100 installations. It's a very capable, straight forward; but there are a few gotchas if you don't set them up properly.
