Anybody knows if foreign pilots are getting hired at all by the airlines now?
By foreign I mean legal to work in the US of course...

Thanks for the info

The 14 largest U.S. passenger and cargo airlines have furloughed nearly all 8,500 pilots they had hired since 1999 -- mostly under force majeure. American, Northwest and United plan to furlough almost 2,600 more in coming months.

Northwest and American, two of the nation's largest airlines, confirmed Tuesday that they are firing employees without severance pay, invoking a so-called force majeure clause in their union contracts that protects companies from such unforeseeable circumstance.

The airline plans to furlough another 150 pilots by next January because of declines in passenger traffic caused by travelers' fears of the disease.

He is among 250 Delta pilots furloughed under force majeure since April. The latest group was in June. Altogether, Delta has furloughed 1,310 pilots -- its highest-paid employee group besides management.

...I don't think the airlines are hiring anybody right now.

airlines hiring...

Dear MYFpilot

While it is true that a bunch of airlines are in bad shape right now, some are hiring. Mesa, Skywest, Comair, ATA, AirTran, Jet Blue, Falcon Air Express, Southwest and a few others are all either gearing up to hire or are already actively hiring. It is VERY competitive right now but I see people moving all the time. Send out a few resumes...

Happy Landings

What do you mean by "airlines"? If you're referring to the U.S. major airlines, I doubt any of them will be hiring for at least 5-7 years. As far as "regionals" go, if you don't mind purchasing your job, try Colgan.

Mesa has called about 50 guys for GS in the past two weeks (they hadf a pool of about 100). They are runing GS's in all 4 equipment types next month. No surprise considering they landed contracts for about 100 new jets over the next 2 years. I'd assume Mesa sould be hinring soon. If you want to work for them, I'd get your app in.

Competitive times are unknown by me. I'd guess 121 time or some jet 135 time is comeptive, but there's always the occasional CFI who gets in too.

Times are tough right now, good luck getting on wherever you go.

Now is a great time to get into aviation. We want you --and then the regional airlines will want you. Did you know there is a shortage of pilots. Thousands of pilots will retire any day now and there will be a severe shortage of pilots. Times are not hardly tuff, times are a booming and it will only get better.

Don't forget...

Regional Airlines are growing at an unprecedented pace. Between now and the year 2005, most established airlines will retire up to 50% of their current pilots. This will create an estimated 30,000 new openings in the cockpit.

It's a great time to become a pilot...

One reason for this is that there's a mandatory retirement from airline flying at age 60. With thousands of pilots from the Vietnam-era and post-deregulation hitting that age, opportunities for future pilots look promising.

If Mesa's hiring, how come their website advertises that they are not accepting resumes at this time. One advantage to going with Mesa, you know it can't get any worse.

Hey now! That might have been below the belt.......it was funny though

From 3 furloughs in 15 mos. and making a grand total of 16,932 in my first year as an FO

Well just exactly how much experience does it take to be able to recognize that things could easily get better or worse in this industry? If you think that the "race to the bottom" is over, think again because I think lots of pilots are willing to work for less than they are right now. Mainly because they buy into the lie that times are tough and there's no money to pay up.

Just an opinion.

Oh, and don't let me forget, you can't be undercut by anybody but yourselves.
