Thanks, everyone, for taking the time to comment. All posted very good points. 99% of my flying is done over water so maybe I should look into trading in my flip flops for flippers! Thanks again for taking the time to help me with my question!

Do a search for Art "shower shoes" Wilson. He flew for CAT and Air America in Asia. He preferred shower shoes to boots for flying. When Air America forced him to wear boots he's sneak a pair of shower shoes into the plane and change before takeoff. He got shot down several times and walked out long distances through hostile territory in his shower shoes. DOn try this at home.

As for Sorrels, try "bunny boots" (military arctic footwear) they're insulated rubber about twice the size of your foot or more.

A student of mine way back when used to wear "Aqua-Socks". You know the neon orange, blue, and yellow elasticky shoe thingys made for use in a pool? To each his own I guess. One other guy I knew wore 'rastlin' shoes while he flew his tail dragger, thought it gave him more feel on the pedals.

Do what you gotta do to pass the ride (I'd wear shoes) then do what makes you comfortable.

This whole thread is a joke, right?

Just because the regs don't specifically state in verbatim "shoes are required" in plain english dosen't mean you can just go barefoot.
That's like if we takeoff and I strip down to my underwear and run up and down the isle of the airplane like a madman. Is there anything in the regs stating in verbatim that "a pilot cannot strip down to his underwear and run up and down the isle"; NO, but does that mean you should do it, probably not. (Unless you're a hot blonde flight attendant, then that's ok:) !

Actually, yeah, it *does* mean that you can go barefoot. That's the concept of a free society, in order for something to be prohibited there must be a law(regulation, code whatever) against it. If there isn't, then it's legal. Personally, I think that flying barefoot is a poor idea, but that has more to do with crashing than flying. There's no regulation (that I know) of against it. and if there's no regulation against it, it's legal. Tell us why you believe that flying barefoot is illegal? Not why you think it *should be* illegal, tell us why you think it *IS* illegal.

There's an air taxi operation in the South Pacific (can't remember the name or the location--might be Fiji) running an all-floatplane fleet. Their pilot uniform is the standard short sleeve white epaulet shirt, shorts, and rubber flip flops. That's the company I want to fly for. :)

Dude, go for it!(barefoot)

I've got a six year old pair of Rainbow's that i wore for a year straight while in high school(i got really sick from wearing shorts and sandals so no dice for year 2) I think the Van's will be your best bet as far as shoes go. Topsiders are good (boating shoes) but they are basically the same. I have never thought of the advantages of wearing no shoes, but now that think about it, if I get a chance to compete one day in aerobatics, i may be barefoot!!!!!!
