I just wanted to know if a person is confident enough an knows the material,
can that person just go take the written exam for the private pilot test? OR do you have to have to demonstrate to an instuctor that you know the stuff, then he/she will sign you off or say that you were knowlegeable enough to take it? My reason for this is because at the FBO I attend for flight lessons, ground school is optional but recommended. But I have a large load of books and DVDs from ASA, Gleim and Jeppesen chocked full of all the stuff I need to know. I read and watch them all the time just incase I feel I missed something. I feel I know thew stuff pretty well so I just want to try for the test instead of spending extra money on ground school...Because what I'm doing now is sort of a home based study....As I listen, my CFI is telling me the same thing the books and DVDs is telling me..... That's money saved towards aircraft rental.......Just want to know if it can be done....Thanks.

You do need an endorsement from an instructor. You need to get used to always looking up questions like these in the FAR/AIM, and getting the info straight from the horse's mouth.

Anyway, if you have home-studied and know the stuff, most guys would spend 1 or 2 hours max with you and review your knowledge, and sign you off.

Do what I did and just do the studing at home. The Sporty's tests help a lot. Use the study buddy and go through all 1200 questions until you get an average of 95%, then take three practice tests with a 90% or better and you will do just fine. I studied for that for about 5 months, my Instructor signed me off, I went and took it and was done in like 20 mins., the lady came back and was like "that was fast", come to find out I ended up with a 93%.

Don't just memorize the questions though, actually know the stuff, like the FARs and Aircraft Systems.

Goodluck!
