Hi all,

I would like to ask you few q's:

- how is the schedule (days on/off) on reserve/line?
- how long is reserve this days?
- how long are the trips, tipical trip?
- how many pilots commute?
- how is life in north KY, and Cincinnati area?
- how is the training, where, and how long?
- if upgrade to CPT took let's say two years, would this mean that, you will be paid 3rd. year CPT pay, or 1st. year CPT pay???

I gues, that's enough "hows" for now.

Thanks very much.

Probably the first thing everybody here is going to tell you is: "Dude... it's all been answered before, use that neat little feature called Search and you will find answers to most this questions"

With that said, almost every time I've asked I have gotten answers and that's what makes this board so nice, so I'll Answer a few of them, cuz I don't know that much.

So scroll down and I'll answer right after your post

My understanding is that for both reserve and Line holders it's
the same it could be a 1, 2, 3, 4 or even a 5 day tripp

However while on reserve you will have days on which you are on, and this days will have what they call windows of up to 14 Hrs in which they can call you to begin a tripp. It can happen at any time and be for any length, provided you meet the regulatory rest periods and all that.

First year (New Hire) you will have up to 11 days of a month, and it as well as pay changes as per the contract. (http://www.airlinepilotcontracts.com/Contracts/Comair2001.pdf)

- how long is reserve this days?

Sure will seem like for ever, and might vary by equipment, Average to 6 Mo to 1 Yr, HR keeps saying 2-3 years to upgrade.

- how long are the trips, tipical trip?

Dunno, between 1 to 5 days, but someone else will have to expand on this.

- how many pilots commute?

Enough for there to be a commuter clasue, and it to be doable, of course it will vary greatly, how easy it is depending on where you are comuting from.

- how is life in north KY, and Cincinnati area?

Dunno

- how is the training, where, and how long?

A. Intense and done proffesionally by good people (you choose what you beleive from this, I start on the 24th of this month)

B. CVG

C. 3 Months aprox.

- if upgrade to CPT took let's say two years, would this mean that, you will be paid 3rd. year CPT pay, or 1st. year CPT pay???

Yes 3rd year pay means that you have been with the company for 3 years and they will pay you depending on the seat that you are in, if it's the left, then it's 3rd year CA pay even if you just qualify, or as soon as you qualify, again read the contract.

I gues, that's enough "hows" for now.

Thanks very much.

Hi,

Hope this answers most of your questions:

1. Minimum days off: 11 in a 30 day month, and 12 in a 31 day month.
2. Reserve is about 6 months from newhire to having a high speed line.
3. Trips vary, from out and backs to 5 day trips where you don't see CVG except for the first leg out to the last leg back.
4. Quite a few commute but I don't know how many. We also have a pretty good commuter policy.
5. Northern KY/Cincinnati is nice. I don't live here though so I can't give you much more info, maybe someone else will chime in.
6. Training is very professional. All done in Cincinnati as far as I know, took me 2 months from start of groundschool to completion of my initial PC.
7. Pay is based on years of service, so you'd make 3rd year Captain pay in your example.

Hope that helped some!

Q's

just to expand a little, based on my experience. i started in nov. 02.

1. 11/12 on reserve, i'm averaging 14-16 off as a line holder.

2. i'd trust HR on how long reserve will last, as well as upgrades. the current flood of hiring/upgrades is due to delivery of new aircraft. once that stops, getting off reserve/upgrading will be driven by retirements or people leaving for the majors. i don't see alot of that in the next few years.

3. trip length all depends. on reserve one time, i got called in for ready reserve, and on the way in they gave me a 5-day trip. when i got back they extended me for the 6th day. expect the worst when packing. as a lineholder, bid for what you prefer. as a commuter, i go for 4 & 5-day trips. i always get them...

4. trip length depends on what you bid for, but as a lineholder you should get trips that have an average of 5 hours of flying a day, 11 hours rest on layover, and at least 83 hours on your line. there are exceptions of course.

5. most guys in my class commute. coming out of Florida in general sucks, but people still get it done. I live in ATL and it's not easy, but i haven't missed a trip as a lineholder. commuting isn't great fun on reserve, but it's doable.

6. N. KY is cheaper than Cincy, so most guys live there. a little rural, but the city is close enough. Florence was great for the crashpad, right near the mall.

7. training was 3 months (for us anyway) in CVG, and while you'll probably stress out over it, you'd really, really have to work at it to not sail through. just show up and pay attention.

Welcome!

Captainv

More q's...

Hi all,

Thanks very much for the info.
I have few more q's; do you get any time off while on training?, as far as days ON/OFF, do you get days off between trips, or all at once?

Thank you again.

slight correction here...12 days off in a 31-day "bid period". not every 31-day month is a 31-day bid period...

and yeah, you could have used the search function
