capt and I were taking some guesses as to what it was but whats the "do dee do dee do dee" for in the background. always seems to come out when you say "2 o clock, three miles, same altitude"...

I think it is a serious question. I know the sound he is refering to and I always wondered. I hear it at least once or twice a day in the background from approach to center frequencies.

He's obviously never heard it. In time, he will.
I'm guessing it's just a non-threatening traffic advisory - probably gets more annoying if it turns into a conflict.
Of course, I'm probably totally wrong - it did happen to me once before :laugh:
 
My guess is some sort of a traffic alert for ATC.

When I hear it I usually put the paper down and do a quick scan of the horizon, while the Captain usually opens one eye and peeks at the TCAS.
