capt and I were taking some guesses as to what it was but whats the "do dee do dee do dee" for in the background. always seems to come out when you say "2 o clock, three miles, same altitude"...

...

You can't be serious, right??

I think it is a serious question. I know the sound he is refering to and I always wondered. I hear it at least once or twice a day in the background from approach to center frequencies.

yeah you nailed it...I'm not serious. tool...

He's obviously never heard it. In time, he will.
I'm guessing it's just a non-threatening traffic advisory - probably gets more annoying if it turns into a conflict.
Of course, I'm probably totally wrong - it did happen to me once before

My guess is some sort of a traffic alert for ATC.

When I hear it I usually put the paper down and do a quick scan of the horizon, while the Captain usually opens one eye and peeks at the TCAS.

That really is a good question - one which I myself have wondered for some time. I guessed that it was some interphone between agencies (appr/tower/center/whatever)

Although I think it sounds more like "do wee do wee do wee do wee"

ProPilotWorld.com. Hold West, along with Don Brown of AvWeb.com fame, do a great job of answering all of your ATC related queries.

Its their confilict alert.

I've heard it called the "ca-ca" alarm, as in, "Oh ca-ca, I better turn one of these guys. . . "

That sound is the conflict alert you hear on STARS in a tracon enviroment, the old system sounded like DU DU DU DU, for conflict alert or low alt (MSAW min safe alt warning)
