Anyone go through flight training there? What was it like? Costs?

I added up the fees and it came to about $60,000 grand! And that's including already having my PPL.

I was planning on majoring in aeronautical engineering but decided to change my mind and go with the aviation technology and get my ratings through the school. I was hoping to get an AFROTC scholarship (techinical degrees are much easier to get), but I figured I would rather major in something that's easy and I will do well in. To get into UPT, it's based on your GPA (not your major) among other factors. So the higher the GPA, the better.

What do you think the chances of getting a AFROTC scholarship for aviation technology is? (Currently a junior with 3.92 GPA with AP classes and 27 ACT, and lots of extracurriculars and sports).

What do you think? Is it worth it, for civilian or military?

Military. No question. Purdue is a great school, and Det 220 is one of the best. Good luck to you, and take advice from someone who went the civilian route and regrets it. Your grades are above what it takes to get the slot. Just make sure you keep them there! Good luck.

I concur with this entire post. Purdue is a great university and has an excellent aviation program, but it is pricy as an out-of-state student.

AFROTC DET220 is one of, if not the, best detachment in the nation. The Field Training results and ratio of DG/SP graduates speaks for itself. Every year there typically are 2-3 cadets in the Flight program on a full or partial ride. One more thing - unless something has changed in the last couple years, every 220 cadet that was in Flight that was medically qualified for a pilot slot got one. I'm biased when I say I should have been added to that list; I completed three semesters of AFROTC before being medically disqualified by DoDMERB for a childhood history of asthma, my 429/500 PFT be damned.

In 2001 I got a Type II AFROTC scholarship to Purdue in Aviation Technology; I had a 29 ACT and 3.7 high school GPA. I'd say your chances are very good!

As far as your major...A popular joke in the Det was "What do you call an AFROTC cadet after his first semester in Engineering?" The punchline - "An OLS major." OLS has gotten a bunch of folks I know to ENJPT...

BoilerUP,

Were you instate? Also, did the Type II scholarship pay for the actual flying? I heard it's pretty hard to get a scholarship if you aren't in a technical major, how tough was it for you? Do you think a technical major helps in getting a pilot slot? I've been told it's based on your GPA and that's it.

Oh yah, I really want an ENJJPT slot, even though I know it's really early to be deciding that, but it's a goal.

I was out of state (KY). I was originally awarded a Type II for Meteorology, and formally requested that it be shifted to a non-technical major. I was told chances of it being approved were slim, but I got notification a couple weeks later that had been approved. At least in 2001 it did! It would have been $15k a year for the last three years; that would have paid full out-of-state tuition and lodging and flight fees would have been on me. I considered that to be a pretty good deal...

A good buddy of mine from Michigan got a Type I (full ride) to the Flight program; he also got ENJJPT and is in Strike Eagles right now...so it does happen!
