Someone check my math (too many zeros and I'm only c average at best). My name isn't Gordon Gekko so I'm not even sure if this is the correct way to calculate margins.

industry - 1.8/36.9 = 4.8%

UAL .463/9.9 = 4.6%
DAL 7.9%
AA .11/6.4 = 1.7%
SWA .097/4.3 = 2.2%
LCC .157/3.6 = 4.4%
JB .053/1.3 = 4%
AK .162/1.3 = 12.5% - wholly crap

Average about 5.2%

Yea It's crazy that an Airline makes that much return ... Time for a huge raise!!!

No, thats not how you calculate margin or ROI.

Definition of 'Return On Investment - ROI'

A performance measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or to compare the efficiency of a number of different investments. To calculate ROI, the benefit (return) of an investment is divided by the cost of the investment; the result is expressed as a percentage or a ratio.

The return on investment formula:

Let me say it before you hear the talking heads say it in ground school this year.

"Well guys, that turmoil in the Middle East... rising fuel costs... competition...."

or

"Well guys, stagnation in the economic sector... stocks are down... not a lot of business travelers these days...."

It's always one or the other.

Glad we reduced profit sharing to fund our raises...doh!

That's not really correct. The profit sharing check given on Feb 14th of next year is NOT affected at all by the new contract. So, you will get an 8.5% raise Jan 1st, and then a larger profit sharing check on Feb 14th, 2013 than you did this year. (more profits this year) Now, the NEXT profit sharing check (Feb 14th of 2014), MIGHT be different. It may be smaller, or it may be bigger, all depending on the profit. This year DL made more, than LAST year. Hopefully that will be the same for next year, and if things go well and better, then the profit sharing may be larger than this upcoming check. In the meantime, there will be a nice 8.5% raise Jan 1st, and that also helps with the DC fund contribution, and even the profit sharing since that is based off of your W2.
