A friend of mine has recently decided that he'd like to take the plunge and go for a private pilot liscense and wanted to start reading up on some things before plunking down the coin for flying lessons. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good private pilot training book or video that I can recommend? Jeppesen and ASA come to mind, but I was wondering if there were others out there that I wasn't aware of. The only caveats are that I don't want to subject him to the horror of the Kings and I don't think Hal Shevers deserves to get any business recommended to him.

Appreciate any input.

In My Honest Opinion, the FAA Airplane Flying Handbook is one of the best "primers" for an interested person to get a handle on this learnin' to fly business. Straight-forward and gives you the basics on all you need to know to start with. And cheap.

Oh wow, updated and overhauled and with color graphics and everything. Very nice, I'll recommend this one to him. Last time I saw this book it was the simple blue ink on white paper version.

Free off the FAA website in pdf form too.

FAA Handbooks

Recently the FAA has published most of their handbooks online in adobe PDF format, on their website. Really great tool in the fact that you don't have to pay for them and also if your working on your cfi or whatever you can cut and paste pictures, diagrams, etc., without the worry of copyright law because it is public domain. If you notice many of the Jepp diagrams are just the FAA's put in a different package. Also, on their website is many videos on things like aeromedical and icing, etc., but it does take some exploring to find, but hey the price is right.

Much as I want to kill Martha in the most violent way possible I still think the Kings make the best stuff out there (and I have seen the Richard Collins & Jeppesen videos as well).

For the written the Gleim online ground school/CD is tops in my book.

AC 560 Why would you like to kill Martha? IS it because of the
hair? or does she just annoy you?
