Of course the examiner is expecting from you everything outlined in the PTS, but isn't it true that if you can generally show that you can fly SAFELY, that you probably wont fail?

I used to send students to a DE who would tell them up front," If I would trust you to take my wife and daughter up,then you should pass with no problem."

If all DE's were like that, I think about a quarter of the pilots would go away. I'm real selective of who I would let my family fly with.

This smells like you have an idea that there is a difference in what is SAFE and what is outlined in the PTS.

I didn't have to prove I could fly the examiners loved ones until my ATP, or maybe the others just didn't trust me that much.

The DE expects 3 things.

1) His money.
2) His money.
3) That you won't kill him.

Thats usually good enough...was for all my checkrides! :p

I'd say there is.

1. No power-off landings in the Private PTS.
2. No stall-spin demonstrations at safe altitudes in certified aircraft in the Private or Commercial PTS.
3. Steep turns no longer in the instrument rating PTS. Now anything over "standard rate" is considered "steep".

Those are just three pet-peeves of mine that I think would help improve safety a bit. It may not, but that's my belief.

Is there a difference in what's safe and what's required to be demonstrated to get the certificate? OOOOOH Yeah.

PS
Good luck on the ride. If your instructor signed you off, you're ready.

Verrry good points, mini. Of course, that wasn't the smell I meant; but have you heard the rumor that there is a new Private Pilot PTS coming with Power-Off 180's ? I read it on an on-line message board - must be true.

Anyway, I hope it is. Just simple power-off glides are no longer taught in primary four fundamental skills "because it isn't on the PTS". Sad.

I was wondering if the original poster had the idea that demonstrating proficiency outside the PTS standards, but yet not crashing, which would be "safe", would be good enough. Yeah, that's what I meant.

Just fly like your instructor taught. Someone once said (military IP i believe) "dont do anything dumb, dangerous, or different and you'll be fine".
