I have a student I am meeting with tomorrow and he has ~200TT and just his private. I know his goal is to become a professional pilot and I want to do everything to support that, but he is wanting to do things a little weird (or at least is seems that way to me)... He supposedly meets all the requirements for the instrument but wants to get his multi-private first, then the IA, then the CA. I think it makes a whole lot more sense to get his instrument, commercial, THEN multi. Has anyone else had this situation before? I'm not really sure exactly what to do since I know this is going to cost him more money down the road (since he will end up taking 2 multi check rides). I feel bad just taking his money knowing everything that I just wrote. Any suggestions??

I did it that way. Instead of flying 50 hours of cross-country in a single for the Instrument rating, I flew most of it in a twin. Since I would need the multi hours eventually, I got double benefit from my cross-country hours and in the end it will cost less than first flying the hours in a single and then building more hours in a multi. Nothing wierd about it, just thinking ahead.

I have a student that wanted the ME flight time...we did his P-MEL-ia...now doing his CMEL then the CSEL will be the add-on. Cost more, but what he wants.

*edit*
and doesn't just cost more because of the higher hourly cost on the twin...it takes longer. The first few flights he was rediculously far behind the aircraft...but he got there.

I just met with him and he still wants to do it his way. Apparently money is not an issue with him (I wish I was in that position!!), so I'll take more multi time and keep my mouth shut! :pimp:

From a cost perspective his way is much better in my opinion, less check rides.

1.
Private Multi & Instrument
Commercial Multi
Commercial Single

2.
Instrument
Commercial Single
Commercial Multi w/ Instrument

...3 either way. Actually, if the DPE isn't willing...he'll have to take 4 doing it his way with the private multi and then the instrument...

I did the private multi thing, but then again, I was getting a Seneca for $114 an hour, and I knew that wouldn't last.

Also, Minitour is right. You still have to take a commercial multiengine checkride. When I got my instrument and commercial single, my certificate still showed multiengine VFR with Private pilot privlages.

On the other hand, all those hours counted toward my 250 for the Commercial, and when I did my commercial multi, it was all logged as PIC, which came in handy getting a job later.

Other than the logging of PIC, it was a useless rating, insurance mins for the plane were 350TT, so I still had to have an instuctor with me until then.
