I've got my first interview at a Regional this week. I never graduated high school, but got a GED instead. I did however go to a well accredited University and walked away with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Should I or should I not present the GED at my interveiw? Right now my plans are to present it because I'm sure they would find out eventually on the FBI background checks, etc. I feel that I have "recovered" from my mistake of dropping out of high school, but don't want to get a check next to my name at the interview because I earned a GED.

You are going to be asked to disclose ALL of your work & educational histories. They will want to see your HS diploma or GED.

Hide Nothing!

Seriously, you don't want to hide it, and I would probably just act like it's about the same as a HS diploma.

For some peple, it is. I have some good friends who were home schooled in very rural Colorado. They are some of the smartest folks I know. When I heard that they had GED's I though to myself "but only total losers have those." Wrong, if you don't go to high school, it's the only real way to prove that you have the equivalent of a high school education. Otherwise, you'd leave it up to Mom and Dad Homeschool to declare their kids as having a ghigh school level education...

I don't know what you mean by "well accredited," but you'll probably be more than fine if it's from an actual school (some of the online degree ones might give you trouble). You may have dropped out of high school, but the fact is, you went back, got your GED, and then went on to a 4 year degree. There's nothing to be ashamed of there. Good luck this week.

PS-Typing has made me wonder? What would pilotyip say about a pilot not having a high school diploma? After all, we're pilots, and flying an airplane involves math no more complicated than I learned in the 5th or 6th grade. So in short, get that job flying the airplanes, skip the HS diploma, you'll be far better off in the future.

Another Thing....

I think the fact that you went on to get a degree from a good school more than makes up for the fact that you got a GED instead of graduating high school. If I was doing the interviewing, the GED would not matter to me.

Good luck....

Just curious, but are you guys talking about simply disclosing that you have a GED/high school diploma or actually producing it for the interviewer?

I've had 5 regional interviews (all successful) and have never had a question about, let alone had to produce, my HS or college diplomas.

Either way, I would think that by completing college you have more than redeemed yourself for your "mistake". To turn you down based simply on the fact that you have a GED seems pretty stupid to me, but then again look at the industry were in.
