I have about 6 years left in the Navy prior to retirement, and I would like to use that time to prepare for a corporate flying job.

Unfortunately, I probably will probably be stuck with non-flying staff jobs for the remainder of my time. (I had to fight tooth and nail to get a flight instructor job, and after 6 months, the Navy "volunteered" me to Iraq on a 1year TDY with the Army). I should have about a year instructing in T-6s when I get home before they PCS me to a boat staff job.

I plan to get a CFI and fly as much as possible during my remaining "non-flying" Navy years. Is there a type rating I should get to be competetive for a corporate job? Any other advice is welcome as well.

Very objective question about the type rating. Are you going to be absorbing the cost of the type rating or will the military offer assistance? If you desire a type rating, I would consider The Cessna 560XLS or Soverign 680, or Bombardier 300 or 604. Others will certainly supply different opinions about the best type rating to acquire.
 
Col ... Network at your local airport. Get to know people. Let them know your seperation date. Call on local 135 jet operators. A lot of people have gotten that dream pt 91 job while flying a charter. (I did). All the other stuff will fall into place.

95% of corportate jobs are filled by people who know someone. Sad but true for those trying to "break" in.

I will be paying for type ratings out of pocket. I want to get the most bang for my buck.

Then don't bother paying for your own type. Unless you have an agreement with someone in advance you'll find that there isn't much demand for guys with a type and no time in said type. Best thing to do IMO is network network network. It is definitely a "who you know " world out there.

my 2 cents

What they said, if you want to work out of your local area, go out there with some resumes and have a cup of coffee with some of the flight departments, you would be surprised at how many people will just mail or fax their paperwork out, too afraid to knock on doors. Don't waste any money on a type rating, total waste of time, it's like going to a potential employer and saying you will work for half salary, no reason to pay for training with your background, good luck.
