I'll bet that Chico meant to say "caliper pin", didn't ya?
Seriously, the brake pressure check is a great habit. Do the same thing right after liftoff to stop the gyroscopic effect of the tires before retracting the gear. It saves on wear and tear if you aren't fighting the ridgidity in space of the spinning tire assembly.

I'd just add about memorizing checklists that in a least a couple of programs in which I instructed we learned to flow and back up with the checklist. Especially Riddle, and particularly in the Seminoles. I recall people saying the Riddle procedure was very similar to Horizon and that people who went to Horizon from Riddle appreciated that training. Some airlines, such as JAL, make you memorize the checklist. Japanese students are very good at memorizing checklists.
