Continental mulls non-stop US flights from 4 Indian cities

Ashwini Phadnis
`New York-Delhi service has exceeded all expectations'

New Delhi , Nov 20
The US-based Continental Airlines, the world's fourth largest airline, is examining the option of launching non-stop flights between the US and several cities around the globe including Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai.
"While the airline would look to expand into India, we do not have any announcement to make at the moment. The airline, however, is exploring options all around the globe for what can be done with the Boeing 787 aircraft that it will receive in 2009," said Mr James J. Summerford, Vice-President (Europe, Middle East and India), Continental.
"The aircraft would be the platform for us to do extensive expansion of our international routes."
The airline, which has just completed one year of non-stop services between New York and Delhi, has said that the route has exceeded all expectations.
"We are thrilled to have made the decision to launch the service. It has exceeded expectations on several fronts, be it in revenue generated or the mix of the passengers carried," said Mr Summerford.
Officials indicated that with non-stop flights between the US and different parts of the world being the hallmark of the airline, it was unlikely that Continental would look to launch flights that would stop en route before reaching here.
On whether the airline would look to add a second daily flight on the existing route to India, officials said that it was unlikely. "Adding a second flight will hurt our profitability. However, this does not mean that we will not look at this option in the future," Mr Summerford said. "We will continue to build this route, which has seen demand growing on a month-on-month basis."

I thought CAL served New Jersey? When did they start service out of New York? Thanks. If United buys CAL, will the new service be out of Dulles, VA? United seems to have the widebodies to do the job. Will CAL get more widebodies in the near future?

Flamebait, I would worry about what it going on in your own back yard, like what happens when your shuttle is sold to SWA and all those furloughed 88 hires at USair say they want DOH.

Yes we are getting 2 more 777's next year and 20 787's with option for 20 more plus we are getting 65 more 737-800's and 900ER's.

CAL will do just fine on its own.....some people on here want to start trouble and enjoy seeing others in trouble..

You're an idiot.

Acutually it would be even more insulting to the other airlines that serve the NY area to say that CAL serves New Jersey.

How sad it would be to say that the majority of NY area traffic chooses to go to New Jersey to fly on CAL instead of the "real" New York airports?

I'm sorry you are experiences hardships over at Delta. Nobody wishes to see you guys get hosed. Please don't take it out on us because our company is(at this moment in time) doing well. EWR is in New Jersey. We all know that. Newark does very well for us. You can say anything you want about it not being on the East side of the Hudson but it will still be a very profitable hub for Continental and we will still serve more destinations out of there than any other carrier on the other side. These are just facts.

Airlines make decision based on profitability... apparently the Delhi route making a huge amount of money for CAL... So it wouldnt shock me one bit to see CAL go into a second India city... Mumbai seems like the most likely option but I dont know much about India.

Just to stir things up.. I heard right out of the CEO's mouth that "the 787 makes the South Pacific look very interesting again" Apperanetly the airplane will be capable of IAH- Singapore, Sydney, and others. A lot of people are pushing for it to be a common type rating with the 777.

It's also capable of Newark to Singapore.

Dl currently flies JFK to Mumbai nonstop, and Air India will start from JFK early next year with a 777. We also (supposedly) have 787s on a back burner order through lessors that will be announced after we exit BK. It will get interesting indeed!

Thank god for the new 787's air circulation system...can you imagine all those stink boxes flying from India to NYC non stop...phew

Hardy har har. The Giants are really a New Jersey team because they play out of East Ruthersford and Delta flies out of Northern Kentucky, not Cincinatti. I'm thankful for your logic, what a Thanksgiving blessing for all of us here on flightinfo.

Hate to bust your bubble but...

EWR is not in New York, EWR closer to New York than DFW is to Dallas but I don't ever see any wise-ass remarks towards AA drivers.
CVG is not in Ohio,
SEA is not in Seattle nor Tacoma
SFO is not in San Francisco
HPN (White Plains, New York) is in connecticut not New York
BOS is not in Boston, it is in the city of East Boston.
There are no airports in the District of Columbia they are both in Virginia.

It's not just an American thing, YUL, YHZ, YYZ are not within there city namesakes either.

It is probably harder to find an airport that is actually in the city that it is named after than those that aren't. EWR is by no means unique.

Besides, who would buy a ticket to Rosemont, IL; Euless, TX; or Covington County, KY anyway.

Don't forget MHT "New Hampshire" which is one hour north of Boston

And the Holy Roman Empire was neither Holy, Roman, or an Empire......................Discuss.

Actually, HPN is NOT in CT. Yes, it borders Greenwich CT but it is NOT in CT. Technically HPN has a White Plains mailing address. The H stands for Harrison. The P stands for Purchase. And the N stands for North Castle. Those 3 towns border the airport and are all in NY.

And honestly I would much rather fly out or my New Jersey International Airport than JFK or LGA... Especially LGA... That place gives me the willies in the winter.

If CAL does not get Shanghai, look for a Mumbai announcement very shortly thereafter. They gotta put those two new 777's somewhere.

It's great news to me, I've been having a hard time finding a customer service job in the States. More options, more money.

The 787 is going to be a great plane, with the numbers we are seeing, we can do international point to point on off schedules. This jacks revenue up through the roof, plus CAL and NWA have a 5 year delivery advantage over the other airlines. People will want to fly this thing because it is the 787 and it is ore comfortable.
