It's something has been going on for a long time.
The latest, in a long series of hearings, happens today. RIM, the company that markets them, has been found guilty of patent infringement. They appealed all the way to the US Supreme Court, and have lost at every turn. They were offered a settlement, $450 Million, and they turned it down. They decided to spend their money on lawyers, and they certainly have done that. Now, they are running out of time, and the offer to settle, based on their continued appeals, has long since disappeared.

They, RIM, say they have a sofware work around, but they do not disclose what that is, and there is some speculation that it is also a patent infringement. Just another story of some big business trying to bludgeon their opponents.

Sad part of the whole thing is that the guy who developed the whole thing is now dead.
