Anyone out there (obviously smarter than me) know how to get rid of all these pop up ads? It seems to have gotten worse on my computer (no, I don't porn surf). I've scan disked and deleted all Temporary internet files and regularly delete all cookies on my C: drive, but they keep coming and it's gotten ridiculous. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Red

I would stop using Microsoft explorer as the first thing.
I have been using Netscape and it seems to work just as well plus absolutely no popups, and I don't have a technical answer why. Also most of the bad programs out there are targeted to take advantage of the weaknesses in Explorer.

I also recently ran a program to detect virus, spyware, etc and my computer is full of them. I saw an article the other day that said that 80% of all computers have something "foreign" installed on them. I am going to upgrade my computer and just reinstall everything and be more careful in the future.

If you're running Windows XP, update to SP2 and it'll include a very good pop-up blocker right in IE. Lots of other security updates too.

If not running XP, then install the free Google toolbar, it has a good pop-up blocker built into it.

You sound like me about a year ago. I kept getting so many pop up adds that it was getting rediculous. I asked the same question you just did on flightinfo.com. The main advice I got from several responders, was to stop using Microsoft's Internet Explorer as my browser. A great number of folks raved about the browser called 'Mozilla Firefox', and how you could download it for free. So I did. Although I still have IE on my computer, I never use it anymore, and Firefox is my default browser. I have not had even one pop-up since I started using Mozilla Firefox as my browser.

Download it free from here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Try it out.....you have nothing to lose. If you don't like it, go back to I.E. I doubt you will do that, as you will be free of pop up adds.

mozilla is the absolute best.
I laugh at people still using IE.

Pile On...

I use Firefox as well...great program! Not absolutely perfect...but simple, effective, and free! Also, Ad-Aware and Spybot-Search and Destroy are great programs to clean up Adware and Spyware...and they are free.

Firefox is great! Some pages don't work with it .. very very few .. like Air Whisky's .. but who cares about them anyway? ;)

Firefox is the best browser on the market and I used 3-4 different browsers on various systems all day long.

You may have adware/spyware.........

A good FREE one is adaware. Do a google search or you can find it at download.com.

Hope this helps.......

Alternative browsers

The new version of IE has a popup blocker, finally. Bill Gates always seems to be behind the times on such things. The new IE should be in your latest Windows 2000 service pack.

Having said that, as others have suggested, download Firefox. Firefox is much, much faster than IE and has an excellent popup blocker. The only drawback to Firefox is not all websites recognize it. You can use IE for those.

If you have a fairly current Mac, Safari isn't bad. It has a popup blocker. So does Opera, which is available for Windows and Macs. Opera is slightly clunky to use, though. Finally, Netscape has a popup blocker.

Hope that helps some more.

Two freeware programs you should install are Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and Spybot! You can download both from the "most popular" list at http://www.download.com. With all the spyware, malware, browser hijackings and malicious code floating around today, no one should be without some sort of protection and/or remover.

I used Firefox and it worked great up until recently. Now, whenever I open it, I get an Installation Error meassage that says to connect to the internet. The thing is, I'm already connected. All of a sudden, these messages start popping up like crazy.

I've run all my spyware and virus gear and come up with nothing.

Anybody else out there had this problem?
