I have a couple friends at Polar. Only base in JFK but you can live anywhere you like. Pay is a little better than commuter levels but you get to fly heavy metal. They all seem to like it a lot. They fly around the world. They do quite a bit of military charters. They used to be Flying Tigers which used to be Air America. Thats about all I know. Website for hiring is @ http://www.polaraircargo.com/aboutus/careers.asp

"They used to be Flying Tigers which used to be Air America."

The only connection with Flying Tigers is that one of the founders of Polar had been a Tigers VP. Tigers was founded on 1945 and bought by FedEx in 1989. There was never any connection between Tigers and Air America. Air America was one of the CIA's airlines that operated during the war in SE Asia.

Then I am a victim of good BS; If you are right. I remember one of their pilots told me as much, it may still be true via the actual owners or something. Some of the 747-200's Polar was operating were old FT birds. I dont know for sure if there was any other connections. All I do is jumpseat on them from time to time.

I talked with a buddy who is working for Polar and says HR likes to help out guys who have been skrewed by the system. I guess a lot of them are remnants of the Pan Am / Eastern era and would prefer to help out people who are grinding it out. He really likes the people he is flying with and is enjoying not flying pax. He got on after knowing someone on the inside and being persistant for a year or two. .
