I am planning a family trip up to NYC the first week of June 06. Will probably fly into EWR and then spend a few days in NYC taking in the sights. Anybody know of any good hotels in or around NYC? I know the crew RON one but looking at other options. Location, transportation, cost, etc. Anybody know how much a cab runs these days to go from EWR into NYC ? I am trying to avoid a rental car and just use the subway/buses (and maybe a cab) while in New York City.
Please - any experience or input that you might have, please post. I will greatly appreciate it. Many Thanks.

I was just there this week. You can buy a MTA all day pass for $7 that will get you on any city bus or train that runs through out the city. I stayed in the Wyndham in La Guardia so I cant really say anything about anything on the EWR side. Also, wear some good walking shoes!

I've stayed at the Milford on 42nd street, right near times square. It was small and cost alot, but was cheap as far as NY goes, and its within walking distance of alot of things. Lots of airline pilots stay there, so keep a close eye on your valuables!

Take the New Jersey Transit train to Penn Station from EWR. It'll run about $12. Just make sure you get off on Penn station in NY and not NJ

I'm a native NYer...

For family, to have comfort, cleanliness, good location AWAY from Times Sq, at an almost reasonable price ~ and some interesting, nice-looking surroundings, try...

Larchmont Hotel
27 West 11th street (between Fifth & Sixth Avenues)

Very nice owners.

Amazing, landmark block of private and historical homes.

It's in Greenwich Village.

Close to all transporation.

There are good restaurants all over the place that cater to families.

For NYC the hotel room price is RIGHT.

I grew up on this block.

It's a really good neighborhood.

We just went for the weekend. We stayed at a very nice Double Tree in Jersey City. It was right by the Holland Tunnel and about a block away from the path train that takes you under the river. It was way cheaper than the hotels actually in the city and very close to EWR.
