I'm currently commuting from ORD to MCO and I'll be based in LGA in Nov. and thinking about commuting from LGA to RDU for cost of living. Does any one have any suggestions on areas or apartment complexes near RDU. I've never been, just planning ahead.

Thanks

PS Im a new hire for AE and currently live in Daytona beach, any tips on commuting will greatly be appreciated.

Thanks again.

I really liked the RDU area. If you're younger I would recommend Chapel Hill - great college town if that's your thing. There are some nice quiet wooded apartment complexes in Carrboro which is just a few minutes from Chapel Hill and it's maybe 30 minutes to RDU at the most in pretty heavy traffic.

Speaking from someone with lots of commute experience, It sucks bad when you have some senority. As a newhire in NY it will be 10 times worse.

I would recommend that you suck it up and move somewhere in NY or Jersey. Higher cost of living, but you won't have to pay two rents (Home and Crash pad) while you suffer through the first few years of crap pay and slave scheduling. If AE is like the rest of them you will not see more than 2 days off in a row more than once a month, and even if you have four off you burn 2 of those as travel days since the junior pilots never get the nice afternoon shows, or early releases.

I commuted to reserve at the majors and that was bad enough, had enough money for a nice crash pad but was still only home about 7 full days a month and that was with 12 guaranteed days off and holding reserve lines with 15 days off. I was also based at what was considered an easy commute city, I would hate to deal with LGA on a regular basis in that regard.

Not to mention the stress involved. Some study was done a while back covering commuters. Seems that overall a commuting pilots Blood Pressure ran much higher than the guys that lived where thay were based.

Take it for what its worth. I will always live in base from now on (or within 2 hour drive). Life is much better!!

Look southwest from RDU, towards Pittsboro, for MUCH better pricing on similar sizes and amenities than Carborro/Chapel Hill/Apex/Cary/Morrisville. Less traffic, too, if you have an early morning or late afternoon show. :)

i went to college in raleigh. if you don't have a family and don't mind living amongst college kids, there are plenty of cheap places to be had in the area around nc state. you can find apt's, duplexes, homes for rent, pretty much anything you might be looking for.

Noooooooo!!!!!! Not another yankee moving to the Raleigh area!!!!!! ;)

Seriously, there are lots of great places. If you're young and single, there are 3 universities within 20 miles of the airport (NCSU, UNC and Duke). There are also a bunch of new appartments, townhouses and homes going up in an area around the airport called Briarcreek. They are litteraly next to the airport.

If you have a family and don't care so much to have an active social life, you may want to look for houses in the counties that suround Orange (Chapel Hill), Wake (Raleigh) or Durham. You'll get more bang for the buck.

apex is nice, they have shopping developments going in. Also, it's not a bad drive to the airport, and you don't have to take the freeway!

Hey UPNDSKY, how you like it here on the other side? Are you out of training and in EWR. You should bid to IAH where all the fun is.

Yeah, I'm on the line and livin' the life.

IAH is nice, but I'm commuting and EWR just works better. Also, there are 30 FOs going from EWR to IAH and they are all senior to me, so I should hold a line quicker here. Those are the ONLY reasons I bid EWR.

Oh, that and the fact the EWR-based pilots are simply the best. :D
