Pilot Shop Job

Noticed a job opening at a pilot shop that is an hour away from where I live. In it, they said they are looking for someone that can work in the pilot shop and may be able to upgrade to working as a CFI later on (I am not currently a CFI but I plan on getting it by the summer - I would try for the job regardless of upgrade options).

I looked them up online and it looks like they have a pilot shop, flight training, fuel, mx/avionics, and other services.

Unfortunatey, I haven't worked in a pilot shop before but have a good idea of what it would include (being that I have been flying for a while). I am wondering if any of you would be willing to share what they are most likely looking for and what duties I might have (especially things the pilots doing flight training don't see).

My guess is the fact that they mention something about a CFI upgrade is due to the lack of applicants for the position, or as I like to put it, a load of crap. I wouldn't apply for a job that is an hour away for the possibility of getting a CFI job, especially if you don't have it yet. I'm sure it doesn't pay well either. Get your CFI, MEI prefered and go somewhere you are going to build a butt load of twin time: assuming you are interested in this crappy industry as a career.

My advise is be careful in these types of jobs. I have seen it happen where a CFI gets hired to work as a dispatcher, fueler, pilot shop, etc. as a way to get an "in" to the company. However, when a CFI position opened up, they will hire someone from the outside because they don't want to have to find a replacement for you.

I've seen it happen.
