Is social security taken out of pay? What would you expect to make during UPT and what taxes do we have to pay? Thanks

You will make base pay O-1 while going to UPT. i think its like 2100 or so a month right now as a 2nd LT. in the AF. You will have income tax and SS just the same as everyone else. Base pay will increase with rank, and then you get housing money and stuff like that if you are married.

The base pay is standard for all O-1s in the military, this money is taxable both federal and maybe state, depending on your home of record. You will also receive Basic Allowance for Subsistance, about $150/month and Basic Allowance for Housing if you don't occupy government quarters.

If they have a house on base or a room in the BOQ (Bachelors Officer's Quarters) you won't get this money. Neither of these Allowances are taxable. The Housing is in addition to base pay and is based partially on the going rate in the community for various apartments.

You will also earn $125/month flight pay. This is also taxable.

Hope this helps.

2LT pay, flight pay, 3 dependants, living on base, 8+ yrs service (prior enlisted) = $2600/mo after taxes.

Single dudes bring in about the same WITH their BAH added.

Beats instructing....

Anything that is called "PAY" is taxable ie. Basic Pay, Flight Pay

Anything which is called "Allowance" is not taxable ie. Housing Allowance, Cost of living Allowance etc.
