What do you guys think about a job like this?
Purchaser of a Challenger 601 with 3A engines - looking for a Chief Pilot. Ten (10) hours a month of owner use and twenty-five (25) hours of charter. 80k plus $25.00 hour for charter and good benefit package. 1) Safety Focused 2) East Coast Experience 3) European Experience 4) Understands why someone owns a private plane and makes the service and the details go extremely well with a great attitude. 5) Have a total ownership in operating the airplane from cost to quality of maintenance and physical appearance. 6) A minimum of 3,000 hours turbine time with preferably 1,000 hours in a Challenger aircraft. Owner has operated his own airplane for twenty (20) years - moving up to a Challenger 601.

A couple thoughts come to mind:
I'd imagine you're on call 24/7 on a job like this.
If someone wanted to pursue a career field such as this and purchased a type rating you would have to know which market has the most of a certain type. Say this guy is a pro-golfer, would a Lear or Challenger type rating be more beneficial? I know this question has been beaten to death, but I guess what I’m asking is, in your opinion, which type rating would be most beneficial for Central Florida?

I agree, this is probably a 24/7 job... but then again he claims only 10 hours per month of owner use...

The one red flag that struck me... he is looking for a Chief Pilot... but claims to have had airplanes for last 20 years.. where is his current Chief Pilot going? Is the guy retiring? Is he quitting? Did he get dumped because he doesn't have any Challenger time?

Basically according to what he describes, this is an $87,500 per year Challenger Chief Pilot job on the East Coast... the pay sounds low to me for location and title...

As far as Lear or Challenger type ratings... WEll typically Challenger jobs pay more than Lear jobs.. BUT there are a ton of Lear operators in Florida...

Remember if you are thinking of buying a Type Rating... generally Type Ratings without time in type are pretty worthless...

Hope this helps..

Job

This seems like a good deal all things concidered. Approx 90k for 35hrs a month.

Falcon Capt, I think this might be in FL. The add only talks about east coast experience.

You right about why a chief pilot. Maybe your the only pilot.

I don't know what your situation is but it looks better than most airline gigs out there right now. See if you can get more info. If they were to offer you a job you could alway say no.
I went right to corporate from active duty, if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

good luck

The ad says "Orange County or Palomar". Are they talking California? If so, the the pay is horribly low!

I wonder if he doesn't have it on another company's 135 certificate (aka AirElite, etc), and hot his own, thus getting a guaranteed, or roughly so, 25 hours a month.

They may only have one full time pilot, the Chief Pilot. I know of more than a few operators of large jets (Challenger, Jet Star, G3), that have only one pilot on staff and 3-4 contract pilot's in reserve. Hard to believe sometimes, but their out there.

So then what do you do when operators only hire with time in type? That reminds me of the old AF statement, "You can't do an ocean crossing unless you've done one."

Real quick... sounds like my boss....

24/7 sounds right....been there and looking for better... QOL would not be worth it for the pay considering you'll be involved with 'chieif pilot' duties, and managing the aircraft perhaps. You should add another $30k at for duties in addition to flying. However, someone out there would look at this as an awesome opportunity. Good luck!

BTW a few months ago, I posted "should i stay or should i go" ... just thought I'd let you all know that I'm still with my current employer hanging in there.... I got a raise, much lower than I expected... but I'm glad it came. And yes, I'm still lookin.... the job that 'was' never panned through... they were gonna purchase a CJ2 which fell through... oh well... movin on... thanks for all your advices..

Really?! Shows how much I know, I thought it looked good.

CC,

Let me rephrase: $80K is nothing to sneeze at, thats for sure. However, given the title, location, aircraft, etc., pay on average is low for the position advertised.

"chief pilot" ....(no thanks....)
sounds more like
"only pilot" and use rental pilots to fill in!

I imagine you would be doing the scheduling of MX, overseeing just about EVERYTHING with the operation, schedulng, etc...

BUT....

It IS a flying job in a time when thems' can be hard to come by!!

80K is starting salary for F/O's around me, certainly not "CHIEF PEANUT" pay.....

but again....

Its PAY nonetheless......does not sound like one to uproot and move for, but if its local......why not give it a try!!

I'm tellin ya.... sounds like my company.... although we have a CL600 .. just sittin right now too... as well as the LR 55 which I fly with a dry-leased company who has supplied their own pilot... also based out of SNA... I would be rollin on the ground rt now if it was!! the birds are chirping!!! cheap ! cheap cheap cheap!! LOL

Same Job Posted 3 Months Ago

The same job was posted 3 months ago only it was a Falcon 50 vice a Challenger. Exactly the same wording and all, and listed on pilotcrewjobs.com. At that time I applied and followed up with numerous emails never getting a single response. BTW I met or exceeded every and all qualifications listed in the job posting. Makes you wonder if they just went a different direction with regards to aircraft, or maybe someone is just doing some fishing.

very well could be....

I personally have known small operators who have made up ads just to see what the market is like and who is looking....
pretty sad...(get a life!!!)

If anyone has ever heard back from one of these listings on pilotcrewjobs I'd like to hear about it. I never have; the latest being the Flightworks Falcon 50 SIC position in LGB which has been on their site for a month. Phone calls, messages left, emails to three different people. Me and about 1,000 other guys probably.

"By the time you see the ad, it's too friggin late!"

You all need to remember one fact ... sometimes, due to employment / labor law, these positions must be publicized for application by the general public. I've seen this happen, even though an applicant had already been selected through an internal referral.

Another possibility ... A friend of mine wondered why an A&P position was still on one of the major employment sites, even though the company claimed it had been filled. The company told him that the employment site made it so difficult to remove the listing, they finally decided to just leave it on there. When you think about it, it is in the best interest of the employment site to show as many jobs as possible. Most reputable sites don't do this, but not all of them are professionally motivated.

Here is a prime example of a non-existent job posting. I can't believe this one came up, especially with the current economy:

Challenger babysitter?

Could be a babysitting job... keeping a close eye on an owner/pilot all the while keeping those NASA reports ready to go.

The posted salary is definitely low for any international Challenger Chief Pilot, low for an international Captain, and close to average for an FO.

The required mins are ridiculously low for an international CP position which raises questions as to the validity of the add. The owner probably just doesn't want to pay top dollar for a true CL601 management pilot.

It appears that the owner is offsetting the cost of the aircraft debt service and operating expenses by chartering it. Logical extrapolation from the add requires one to ask the question... can he really afford this aircraft?

Never believe everything you read in an employment add like this. From my experiences, these positions don't last long at all. I'd be very cautious on this one. Yes, yes, any job is good right now.

Good luck,
