What is the likelyhood of getting 10-12 consecutive days off within one year from the date of hire? i.e. hired in October, need days off in July. How much vacation time vs. trip trading will have to be used?

Thanks.

In regards to vacation in July; it is usually one of the more senior months for vacation slots. If you were able to hold July vacation than 10-12 dys off is easy. 20 days off is not uncommon. Trip trading is not something you can count on. If you need the time off and don't have vacation, the only sure fire way to get it off at PDT is to call in sick. Sad but true.

Which is a very bad idea if you've shown FS some desire to be off that trip (trying to swap, vacay bid, etc).

Ya gotta be careful.

As far as getting the time off- if you want it, you got it (one way or another...).

Years of experience showed me that calling in sick at Piedmont is the best way to make for a long vacation. Good luck getting a vacation slot for the summer with one year seniority. Then again, as fast as you guys lose F/O's, you might be lucky.

It's all a gamble. Guys hired this year, could still get Thanksgiving or Christmas off this year in Syracuse if they wanted. Summer months are a little harder, but I wouldn't give up on it yet. Once you get a vac spot, you can have at least 9 days off for vacation (5 vac + 4 golden on rsv). 10-12 should be pretty easy seeing as most FOs hold lines quickly. With mostly 4 day trips, I got 15 days off, 16-30, in Sep and an additional 6 days off earlier in the month. It's gonna be nice next month.

Maybe I should come back up to SYR. I think I would be 9 or 10 up there now. Is that Plywood Box still available for rent?

I have absolutely no problem calling in sick after attempting a swap. I have never been given a hard time or asked to provide a doctor's note. But Sig is right, you can get the days off one way or another. However, if you use sick time you should be very leary about using your travel benefits.

I will be trying to get MDT (very junior from what I hear). The goal is to commute and hold a line right away. I figured I'd ask about the vacation too since the future wife would not be too happy going on a honeymoon by herself.

i used to work at PDT and called in sick many times, and all except once did i travel while i was sick. i wouldn't travel on usairways, i never ever had a problem , never had to call good ole j.b if flying on an a different carrier ask the gate agent to NOT run you through cass (provided that there is a seat in the back), whenever i asked them not to run me through cass they had no problem not running be through after i told them that i was out 'sick'.. or just by a ZED they are a 100% safe bet

if you're here for more than 7 months, you're pretty senior. so you should be good.
