In a few short weeks I'll be making my way down to Sheppard for ENJJPT. From what I gather I'll also do IFF down there, so I'll probably be there for 15 months or so. I'll be living right off base, (I'm accompanied) about 5 minutes from the 80th. Just as I transition from Tweets to 38s the T-6 will be coming online down there, so I'll be among the last to train in the mighty Tweet.

Anyone been down there recently that wants to pass along sage words of wisdom?

Do Guard guys often go there? I was very surprised to get orders to ENJJPT.

Thanks.

The guard gets 2 slots per class.

Are you going to base housing? It's contract housing and not as good as before they changed.

Words of wisdom....don't suck!

When you go to Toby's, watch out for all the local rednecks ready to kick your a$$ because the local Wichita Falls chicks would rather come up to you than those clowns.

Plenty of cougars on the prowl in the seedy, downtown bars (if you're into that of course :) )

Kell boulevard toward the west part of town had some nice houses for sale/rent when I was there.

As a guard guy, don't rub it in that you already have your fighter and the AD guys don't (I'm sure you won't, but heads up nontheless). We had 3 guard guys in my class (I was AD at the time), and one was a dou*hebag...the other two guys were great.

And on the flipside - even though you already do have your fighter, don't forget to study your tail off and keep a good/humble attitude. One of those 3 guard guys forgot that early on and quickly washed out of Tweets. He was the A-10 guard guy.

Have fun.

There was a Guard guy a few classes ahead of me....total tool. He ended up getting fired a few years later from his Guard unit, but I think he got picked up by another one.

Good luck at Shepppard! I really enjoyed the whole experience there. It's fun flying with the euro IPs and the town is the best one you can go to for UPT. Don't fall behind on the books...thre isn't time to catch up later. And have fun...this will really be one of the best years of your life!

Have fun.

High school girls from a town north of the base used to chase students pilots. There were lots of "Nato Mattresses" around.

Tobys, well I have spent many a night there. Knew the owner somewhat too. One of the better places, if not the best place, to drink around there.

Actually guard guys are on the rise down here. 09-02 just started with 7 guard guys. The WG/CC briefed us a while ago that there will be more and more guard guys coming to ENJJPT. Apparently, active duty is not producing as many fighter guys. BTW, there are a crap ton of hog guard dudes down here, all good dudes.

Toby's blows! I guess if you are an academy guy or went to a really crappy college then it might be a step up. But between the local rednecks and 2 ton tessies there it's just an average bar. If you want some nice scenery go to Oldtown (aka boobtown).

Plan on going to IFF here, especially since they closed moody. There has been a push to send guard guys to IFF at the base you went to UPT, unless you go to Vance. It saves the guard the TDY money, I assume. But be prepared for a quick turn, my IFF start date is the thursday following my graduation. With a trip the fuge squeezed in there.

Advice from someone who just finished tweets, try to have fun. The tweet is a fun and easy airplane to fly, imo. If you have any amount of time flying instruments then it's a huge step back with only 1 radio and 1 VOR, not to mention you x-check is all shot to he**.

Help your bros out as much as you can, especially if you have prior time. It amazes me that some of these guys who have 25 hours in a DA-20 pick it up as quickly as they do.

Be humble and don't let the active guys give you to much crap, there just jealous. Not to mention they will most likely want you to get them a job, at your unit, in a few years when they want to palace chase.

Feel free to PM me anytime, i'll actually have time to check this now that we have a break.

Ahhh Old Town Tavern. Used to go and watch a couple of the guys from Bowling For Soup put on an acoustic set there each tuesday.

I don't remember Old Town. Frank's Place, Beer Garden (it opened when I was there), and Toby's were pretty much where I went. We had a lot of house parties, too. Toby's wasn't too bad back then, and it was only a 1/4 mi from my apt at French Quarter.

I lived in French Quarter too, in 96-97.
