Had a reservation since April for a vacation there, got there no full size car available, offered to upgrade, took it, find out at end of trip that the upgrade doubled the original reservation price... cost was on another sheet stapled behind original agreement so I would not see it..

Talked with location manager and national customer service about this.. they really did not care

Beware of bait and switch tactics by Payless, especially in Vegas.. I'll never use them again..

Call your credit card company and deny the additional charges. Do you still have the original reservation and total to prove it?

I had a company charge me $40 for not filling the gas tank when I did. I didn't have the receipt because I paid cash, but they still removed the charge after I complained to AMEX.

Update:

It is the policy of payless National, when one is offered an upgrade, the price is on the amended sheet they nicly staple to the "rear" of the original resrvation you signed.. its is assumed when you take the car that you agree to the new charge.. my mistake was I did not look at the new sheet, assuming that this was a complimentary upgrade since they did not have my original car in stock.. so in the end, I should have read everything they printed out.. still pretty shady in my book.. I'll never use them again..

I got a car from Payless in KC and had a bad experience too. I rented the carin the middle of summer and the vent fan only worked on hi. We didn't figure that out until we where half way to Wichita and I didn't have time to turn back and get a new car. In the end, they would not refund us anything because we put a lot of miles on the car. Understand, I had unlimited mileage in Mo and Ks, so I was well with in the contract. I had booked payless through SWA, so I called SWA and complained. SWA, without me asking, offered to put 8 points onto my rewards card.

I rented from Payless in Vegas this weekend. I must agree that I was given hardsell on everything from upgrade to insurance to gas. "I see you got the economy. Since you're going to Arizona, you probably want to have something with more power for those long hot drives." "You'll want the full coverage or else you will be liable for windshiled chips and loss of use - it could run up quite a bill." "With gas at $4.00 a gallon, you'll want to buy a tank at $3.60 - half a tank down there - half a tank bank and you can bring it back empty." Just say no and it's not a bad experience at all.

Glad it worked for you.. sounds like they had the car you had reserved.. and were not switched to a higher priced car like we were without our direct knowledge... and I did say No to the other options.. it was not bad until the POS car broke down out in the desert.... and then found out the complimentary upgrade ( because they were out of the Full size car I reserved) was not so complimentary....

By the way, I found out later during my complaint, that they were not out of full size cars to start with... I had made my reservation in April, so it was not as if they did'nt know I was not coming..

I still think it sucks that a national company feels it's ok and they can get away with these type of "bait and switch" "last minute, because we know your in a hurry" tactics...

Call your credit card company, maybe you can dispute the entire bill since the car broke down and left you stranded.

Never rented from Payless, but I find that Thrifty has good rates and I have rented from the Vegas location a couple of times now with a just couple of points of interest. Both times they have asked me if I would like to upgrade from an economy car and I have declined, then they say "well, we don't have any economy cars so we'll upgrade you for free...here's a Lincoln Marquis" (or whatever else gas-guzzling POS nobody else wants) I say "No thanks, I'll take nothing more than a midsize for the price an economy and you can credit me a free tank of gas for the inconvenience, or I'll go to Budget/Avis/Hertz/National/Alamo/etc..." Both times they agreed and I was on my way. Free gas...doesn't get much better than that!
