Got an offer to fly right seat in a citation, and westwind, occasional baron trip. Smaller company part 91, based in the south. 40K first year and type in the Citation, then 45K second year and type in the westwind. Third year is 50K till I have the time they need to be co-captains then 55-65K.

That what the going rate is? My fiance' is still in college and moving 12hours away could put a damper things, (no lovin for the fat kid).

Just looking for thoughts on the situation, an outside perspective.

Thanks in advance.

It is jet time, it is type ratings, both of these things will help you get your next job. It is part of paying your dues and building your resume. 12 hours easy one day, it will test if she wants to stick with you. If this bugs her it will make pursuit of your flying career more difficult.

Judging simply from what you said, I would do it. YIP is right, types + jet time=good thing to have on the resume. Don't let the girl situation stop you.

I'd certainly do it, and if you won't, pass along the job lead. ;)

I don't know how long you've been dating the chick whose now your fiance, but she should know by now what the profession of being a pilot is all about. If she's not willing to stick it out and make it work one way or the other, she might not be the ideal life-mate for you. Or you need to find yourself another non-travelling job. And I mean this nicely, but the last thing you need is someone whose going to hold you back from possibly good career moves in the future.

How much more college does she have left? Could she possibly move with you, and continue taking online classes? I found myself in the same situation you're in when I took my current job. I was living on the west coast, and my wife still had another year of college left. I couldn't turn down the job or the oppurtunity, so I moved out here, and she stayed behind, and eventually managed to cram that full year into one semester and summer school. We spent about 5 months apart. And once she was done, I moved her out here, she had her degree, I was making great money at a great job, and all worked out well.

When it comes to the corporate world, it sounds like you got a pretty good job there, and I would be reluctant to turn it down - based on what you've told us. And don't forget, once your fiance gets out of college, your going to need that good job and paycheck to help pay back all those college loans! ;)

any jet time is good time and living down south is usually cheaper than living in the north east and .......nobody get bent here but the further south you go genererally the finer the women get ha
good luck

The wife supports me either way, I just think it would be tough the first year of being married driving 12hours to see my wife. The pay isnt much of a raise, the jet time and types would be valuable, thanks for the thoughts, I really appreciate it.

Pilotyip hit it right on the head. The good jobs arent just going to come to you. And yea it does suck relocating not knowing but theres only one way to find out. If she supports your move then u know u got a keeper. Gettin that jet time could be tough for some and i have to agree with Canucit. I live in the northeast and with the company i work for we go down south a lot and the women are hotter and nicer. Good luck.

So

So the pay is in ok? Dont know the NBAA avg. Westwind and Citation 500 Co-captain in the South.

Any ideas anyone? I was thinking 65-85K but then again what do I know.

The pay is on the low end of the scale, but not too far out of line, particularly if it is your first jet job. Remember that a type rating at flight safety runs roughly 20K.

The increases aren't bad, particularly considering you are going to be flying from the right seat only. The co-captain pay is a bit low (especially if you are going to be dual qualified), but you can always renegotiate down the road.

Some things to consider:

How much time off will you have and is it guaranteed off (IE not on call)? If so, will you be able to travel to see your wife, or will she have to come to you?

How many days in a row can you get off? 15 days a month off sucks if it's one on, one off.

Is there a training contract? If so, how long and how much?

If you send me a PM with your email address, I can send you some salary figures.

Gotta agree with everyone else on this one.. the pay is good for your experience. The type itself it worth a lot. $65-$85 range is something you would be commanding with experience and a type already under your belt. Granted the qol will have a bearing also, but it's probably sim to what you're doin right now... the 12 hour drive could be a bummer... but I know guys who have relocated much farther than that... myself included. Moved my family from warm sunny days 350 days/yr to mosquito haven ---1500 miles away. It'll be a good test for your better half, bcuz one thing is for sure in aviation, it won't be the last test...good luck to you whatever you decide

thanks

Great replies, I agree if she comes it would be cheaper, but I want her to finish her degree, Things don't move too fast so I have plenty of time, I'm hopin it drags long enough for me to find a place, and let the wife get another semester under her belt then make the move, and be away for 6 or 4 months vs. 12 ..

no training contract, and right seat for the first 200 hrs then co captain, QOL is great , I flew right seat in thier citation and was treated like a king, stayed in the Luxor in vegas and drank for free for 3 days.

Thanks for all the help, its great to get someone elses perspective on this, outside looking in.

Did a search and found Westwind pay low 48 / high 86 / Med 67

When your co-captain on two aircraft doesnt that step the pay up??

Don't worry about pay right, it sounds like it is good enought. This job is about building resume fluff, jet time and type ratings, for your next move. However if they come along with money you find satisfactory then make another decision.

This is the brass ring for someone with low time. Take it. Tell the wife she can call my wife if she wants to hear about sucky first jobs and making adjustments to accomodate your career.
