I've read the "day in the life" of posts a couple of times now.. but I've been wondering about pager duty -- are any of you on call on a regular basis? I imagine that you might be, or there may be a crew pager rotation (i.e. if there are two crews for a C-X, one crew carries week one, the next week two, etc...).

I've spent the past 5 years of my life on call and it drives me nuts at times. How do you manage duty / rest time if you are on call? What about visas and such (if needed)?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers,

-Andrew

No pagers around our operation. Cell phones optional;)

In seven years I've had one trip "pop up". All our trips are schedule at least a week in advance, if not more.

I fly air ambulance, and am on the pager for 8 days and off for 4. We do 12 hour call, so I will be on call from 6am-6pm for four days, 6pm-6am for 4 days, then four days off. The only problem is you don't start your duty until your first page, which can come in the last few minutes of your shift, then the schedule gets all screwed up as you need rest after flying. Plus, if the same happens to the other crew you often get a call that says you now have it until X:XX. Basically, you are always on, except for the middle two of your four days off. I love the job and the company, but my wife is constantly up in arms, and wishes I had a schedule. It can get old at times, but the neat thing is I have flown to hundreds of different airports at a moments notice, so there is always something new to see. Oh, and during the busy times if you want to smell good, you need to stay ahead of the laundry curve.

no pager, asked to be in phone contact from 8am-6pm for trip notification. Only REQUIREMENT is to check email daily for trip changes in the future. I have haeard 1-2 pop up trips a year for emergencies. No big deal if you cant make it. You gotta have a life right??

flexibility is the name of the game in corp aviation!

WE all have company issued (and paid) cell phones.... We are supposed to be able to be reached by phone from 8am-5pm Mon-Fri (unless we are on an off day)

The calls are for trip notification only... In my 6 years with this company I have had less than 3 "pop-up" trips... These were all due to someone calling in sick or an aircraft breaking down and we had to go rescue the pax... all 3 had about a 4 hour lead time and if I couldn't have gone they would have just went to the next guy on the list... no big deal...

Our trips are all scheduled 5 to 90 days in advance and are crewed as far as 45 days in advance (or immediately if the trip comes in shorter than 45 days notice)

Pager and cell 24/7

Trips are both scheduled as well as pop up, most pop up trips are the real muthers, but then again aren’t they all?
