I had a new set of door panels molded from the old ones for my Cessna. Can I install these myself, or do I need a licensed mechanic? I know its not a structural part of the aircraft, but I had a CFI tell me the mechanic has to do it.

FAR pt 43, Apendix A, para c

Preventative maintence,

(11) Repairing upholstery ......

(12) Making siple repairs to non structural farrings, cover plates .....

Anything that falls under "preventative maintence" can be done by any private pilot.

And you must still sign it off in the maintenance log book, ie, release for service. Use your pilot rating plus certificate number in the signoff.
