Is guard flying restricted to domestic operations (protecting our soil and borders) or do Guard pilots deploy internationally? Is it different for Army guard over Air guard?
Is it common for a guard pilot to fly into enemy territory?
I don't know to what extent the Guard is normally deployed, but they do deploy; the NOLA guard was at ONW when I was there a while back. I don't know how common that is, it may have had something to do with the post 9-11 increase in manpower requirements.
As of now, I am not actively pursuing a military career of any sort. In the past I had been interested in the guard, reserves, and active duty (all branches). Recently, when I was telling a friend about the specific unit - direct app. - process that the guard and reserves offer, he asked if "national guard" were defense only missions. I wasn't sure what the correct response was. My assumption was that it was basically a question of manpower. If the military needed guard manpower overseas, then they would go. However, I wasn't sure if they regulary deployed, especially since many pilots are part time.
Any info you might be able to share would be very interesting to me. Thanks!
The airlift/tanker units fly pretty much the same trips as the active duty folks. The only difference is that the guard and reserve units usually get more of the "good deal" trips, since they have to get their people to volunteer for trips. Of course, when they get activated all bets are off- they go to the same garden spots as everyone else.
I fly for the Utah Guard and I have been to "garden spots" like Turkey, France, Italy, England, Japan, Iceland, Azores, Hawaii, Guam, etc, etc, etc... I love flying in the Guard. As far as homeland stuff...of course. I think I have been to every state in the union. This also includes Noble Eagle missions. YES - we were activated and sent overseas. We ended up in a classified location where we sailed, raced go-carts, and went skeet shooting on our days off.
