I was watching a business analyst on cnbc talking about the airline stock as a poor choice. One of the major reasons he stated was that right now we are supposedly in "mid cycle" which is the time that the airlines are supposed to be building equity. Of course we all know that this isn't happening this time. He speculated that the airlines will not recover from the last down turn before the next downturn.

What say you?

If it is indeed mid cycle and the airlines are supposed to be raking it in and building their "equity" right now, they should also be hiring gangbusters right now as well. Since they are not, i am concerned that we are completely going to miss this hiring cycle and be stuck in the regionals for the next 7 years.

Outlook of the industry? BAD
Outlook for pilots? WORSE

Ultimately it will be up to the pilots at SWA when the fuel hedges run out as to whether or not the other airlines can return to profitability. We have seen this week that SWA still controls the pricing market.

I suggest buying stock in a beer company and start drinking more.

there are so many people telling me that the airlines are "hiring like crazy" now and keep my chin up... yeah..i

Going PFT doesn't mean you'd be better off. :)

i have a buddy at ...gulfstream...and he shelled out 33K and he really is flying for an airline now. anyway, i am not in debt and do not have that possible "thing" over my shoulders so no regrets. however, i am not so fast to say it is not a bad way to buy your way into an industry. my buddy laughs at my first job horror stories. he went from multi commercial to right seat for an extra 33K. i am still happy i have my cfi and what not, but i am wondering how many guys are secretly thinking, pft would have been a better way.

I still don't get the PFT deal. Flying is like a secret club: everyone on the outside wants in, and everyone on the inside wants a bigger paycheck. To shell out an extra $33k just to find out it's all smoke and mirrors doesn't really make "cents", IMO.

I think that most people don't understand the industry. Just like everyone still thinks we all make 100K a year to start and retire at 400K with a private plane. In all honesty 33K is chump change to spend on flight training. It costs around 40-50K on average at an FBO nowadays to get up to your CFII/MEI.

I would say that flying is a sort of secret club. It takes money to do. You are either already rich or now in debt.

I forsee concessions! Those guys will back down like the beaten dogs they are! HAHAHAHA!

Seriously,

I would like to add that SWA pilots will have no effect on the state of the industry pay rates. Their pilot group is too small and they fly only one type of aircraft. It will take a Legacy pilot group to raise industry rates.

You fool! When they run out of fuel heges they must decide the fate of the industry. SWA will ask for pay cuts to keep the 99$ cross country fares. If the pilots do not take pay cuts SWA will be forced to increase their fares increasing all the other airlines fare back to profits.

The president spoke to me in a dream I had while napping on layover today.

He said that the Lloyd had spoke with him directly and told him that the airline industry was being punished for hiring too many guys that wear gold chains and slip on boat shoes who were named Lawrence, but were not necessarily sailors so to speak.

Poop!
