I did a 10 page paper on the industry for college english a few months ago. I ended up going with airline deregulation since there was well over the miniumum of 10 sources for the topic. If youd like any pointers or any advice let me know, I learned a lot from doing the research from the paper and would be glad to help.

Any tips guys? Sure would appreciate it!

Airline term paper

What about addressing history? You could talk about the origins of the airlines, as private carriers of airmail, and how they branched out into pax traffic. Early equipment, which included single-engine biplanes. Ford Tri-Motors. Fokkers. Stinsons. Boeing 247s, etc. DC-3s, for sure. Origins of ALPA. Fast-forward to the late '40s, and how the British had the first jet airliners. Boeing 707s, DC-8s, Convair 880s, etc. Deregulation. Frank Lorenzo, Carl Icahn, etc. Southwest and Herb Kelleher. Finish with the present. 911, and the number it has done on airlines. TSA. The recession.

Bibliography would include Flying the Line Volumes I and II and Hard Landing by Thomas Petzinger. Too bad you cannot use Fate is the Hunter. Although based on fact and real people it is probably regarded as a novel. You don't need to be the Jayson Blair of your college English class.

Hope that helps. Good luck with researching and writing your paper.

that ALPA Book, FLYING THE LINE?

I read that, it seemed like it would be a good source book for a HISTORY of the the airlines term paper.

"Frontiers of Flight" videos by the Smithsonian are a great source, plus they will aid in the procrastination of actually writing the paper since it's hard to stop watching them.

Alaska,

It's been a long time since English 101 and communications courses, but let's try this.

In my business life, the only way to write any paper, book or communication is to state a "goal" or "objective" for the paper and then write your final conclusion. I've looked at your concept map (we used to call them outlines and they were far more organized - but hey I was taught by a bunch of nuns and priests that would beat me senseless if I didn't learn proper methods).
My problem with your "map" is I can't figure out where you are going.

So, state your objective and conclusion.

From what I see I could write:

1.) Goal - Term paper giving a sweeping overview of the various types of air transportation alternatives available.

Conclusion - For someone seeking employment in the aviation industry, there are many diverse opportunities ranging from traditional airlines to holiday charter operators.

2.) Goal - Paper details the changes in the airline industry as higher cost traditional airlines are replaced by low-cost carriers.

Conclusion - The paradigm of the tradional airlines with their high cost structures and classes of service is being replaced with Low Cost Carriers and holiday charter operators. The overhaul in the industry will ultimately touch even the freight and cargo operators lowering the costs of all air travel.

3.) Goal - compare and contrast United States vs. world competion airlines.

Conclusion - The U.S. airlines are more dynamic and free to change their market but European and other world-wide competition have the advantages of state sponsorship, subsidies and legislation that protect their own markets.

There you go - three different papers all based on the nebulous concept map provided. Set a goal, make a conclusion and then write a paper that supports your goal and conclusion. Can't be any simpler. (Ruler yielding nuns and stern looking priests everywhere rejoicing in another successfully educated student - the rod was not spared on my behalf and man did I learn some lessons.)

Enjoy your time in school - everybody tells you that it will be worse after you enter the world of making a buck - wow is that ever an understatement!

Hey thanks for the tips!

Tarp, thats definately not the complete outline, that was a 3 minute job, my time is very limited with all thats going on now. So thanks for the great advise, I'll get to work on my paper.

Bobby, you also have a great idea, start from past and proceed to present.
So you say Flying the line and Hard Landings are good sources for history books? Where can I get these books, library?

Thanks!

Ask any ALPA member or try amzon.com there alaska. The ALPA people usually get a "free" copy of "Flying the Line the first 50 years of ALPA"

Flying the Line and Hard Landing procurement

I doubt that any of them are in the typical college library. I bought mine at www.amazon.com. Good investment, because you might find yourself rereading them from time to time.

Let us know how the paper comes out.

Thanks guys!

I will post the report on this forum when I finish it! I went and ordered all 3 at Amazon, cost me $35 - but the investment should be worth it.

So far all the advice I've gotten here was mostly great - Thanks guys and gals!

Narrow your topic. About the only thing I remember from college English was that phrase, narrow your topic. When you narrow it down, narrower than you think possible, then cut it in half. Then write your paper.

Suppose you were going to write about the advent of the jet age. Narrow that to the DC8. Then narrow that to the DC8, Super61. Then narrow that to the engines used on that airplane, and how their selection changed the business.

BTW, I have no idea what the DC8-61 engines even were, but you get the idea.

good luck.

Your topic is way too broad for a term paper. Narrow it down considerably. A good topic would be the the recent economic downturn and the affect on organized labor.
