hey everybody,

I am considering doing some accelerated courses (Instr. & commercial) and was wondering what ya'll thought about them. Basically im home for the summer from college and want to knock out my instrument and commercial before i go back to school so that way next spring or what have you i can go right for my cfi, cfII and mei. However, i really need to work this summer so i am considering an accelerated program that a local school offers. This way i could get the ratings out of the way and still make some money. The instr. is basically about a 15 day straight through program and you start it with your written already out of the way. I will not be working during this time so i can devote near 100% of my effort to it as well. Anyone ever do a program like this? if so how did it go? would you do it again? and any suggestions for things i should know prior to enrolling in this program? i know there are certain obvious pro/cons but the way things are looking for me, this looks like the best bet. thanks for the input guys!

Despite the fact that instrument and commercial are two difficult ratings to acquire, if you're completely confident in your skills and are prepared to fly every day and study when yo're not flying, then go for it. Otherwise, you may be wasting your money. All ratings are important and some accelerated programs may equip you to pass the checkride and nothing more. It is much better to have in depth knowledge if you want to really wow the examiner and be an excellent pilot to boot. Also, I assume by accelerated you mean a 141 program. If you're doing it part 61, then you'll have to achieve 250 hours before getting your commercial.
Whatever you decide, best of luck!

Just make sure that your new certificates and ratings will tranfers to your college. Some of them only give you credit for training you've done with them.

Accelerated courses

Good advice from Ohio about ensuring that you'll get college credit for your training.

What advantage would you gain if you go through these accelerated courses? Is it really worth it in the long run to rush to finish your ratings? You could end up with a pocketful of ratings without the knowledge you really need and no opportunities to use your ratings and really learn. In the meantime, you will go stale. You might be better off going at it slower and learning it well. By the time you finish the job market may have improved and you can go to work immediately and apply your learning.

Good luck with your choices.
