Several months ago I asked for help in chosing between the three online FIRCs to reval my CFI. The responses were very helpful and I promised that I would follow up with a debrief on my experience. Here goes.....

I went with the Gleim FIRC based on the number of positive responses. I was very happy with this product. It's not fancy but I thought it had good substance. The simplicity made it quick to download, you could work off line, and you could print the PDF for future reference. Some of the topics were pretty good. It's composed of 16 chapters. You first take a 10 question pre-test to see what you know about the topic. The questions get your mind going in the right direction. Next is a 10-20 page Knowledge Transfer Outline. This is the stuff you need to know for that chapter and are tested on in the next section with 10 multiple choice questions. Each chapter takes about an hour.

Once you're done, you can have them reval it for you for a charge. I think it was $25. I'm pretty cheap so I did it myself. You just take a copy of your test results to your local FSDO with an 8710 and your good for 24 more months. The whole process at the FSDO took me 20 minutes.

I hope it helps. I've listed the link below, as well.

I just finished my FIRC at American Flyers.

Good material, short tests. I did some work on it, did a trip, and then finished it when I came home. Now, I just take the printed grad certificate and an 8710 to the FSDO (appointments only) to get the renewal.

And, I never have to pay to do this again.

Not bad.
