Is anybody doing their degree online? I know there are a lot of colleges online now and want to find one that is acredited and also inexpensive. I was looking at Everglades in FLA but they are around 370 per hour. I would like to hear your guys experence with the online education thing....

Thanks
Tom

I just got my Diploma in the mail from the UVSC online deal. It doesn't say a thing about any of it being online, and I did the great majority of it that way. In other words, I just graduated from UVSC, just like the people who take the normal classes.

I think it is a good program-IF-you want to make it good. It can be really easy and you can get good grades without much effort. However, if you do what you are supposed to then I think that it is a pretty good program. I enjoyed it, and I felt that I learned a lot because I put effort into it. If you have any more questions, let me know.

I guess that I should have mentioned that I had a lot of the 101 level math and english type classes from another school. I am reasonably sure that you can take all of those live now through the online program, but I am not absolutely sure. Even while in the online program, I had to take a live fitness class, and I took another one via video tapes, but I think there is a good chance that all of that can be taken online now.

As I mentioned, I had most of my entry level, non-aviation classes done before I got into the program. I finished in exactly two years, including a couple of credits here and there over the summer and taking "block" classes. (Blocks are basically classes that are finished in half the time of the normal semester, they tend to be a lot more work because there is less time, but they are handy if you are trying to get pre-requisites out of the way for advanced classes. I sometimes took a pre-requisite class the first block, and then took the advanced class the second block, thereby cutting some of my time in half.)

As far as the credit for ratings thing works, I will let you know to the best of my ability, as this may have changed a bit since I was there(I haven't taken any classes that required a rating for a while.) While I was there, they just wanted a copy of your certificate or logbook to show that you had the rating. Let me try to elaborate a little bit: For example, say you are taking the commercial "flight" class. Some of the class would consist of tests and such, but a great majority of the points for class would consist of you simply sending them a copy of the certificate. Similarly, the commercial "ground" class would consist of tests/assignments, with the majority of points coming from the score you got from your written test.

A couple of things I want to point out. Like I mentioned, you can easily breeze through the classes and probably get good grades but you won't get much out of it. The very last classes you'll take aren't like that as much and you can spend a significant amount of time on them, but I feel that they are worth it. If you do spend the time, do what they tell you to, then you'll probably have a great experience, as I did. The other thing to remember is that you have to really be motivated. There usually aren't any deadlines other than the end of the semester. That is probably one of the biggest drawbacks. You have to set aside time every day. On the other hand, it's also great because you have amazing flexibility. For example, I once took a test on my computer at 2:00 in the morning. I also took a week off to take a trip, and it wasn't a big deal to catch up. Another thing that impressed me was the instructors and course managers. The support is excellant, and they really want to help you. I got to know one of the course managers pretty well and I also have met many of the others, and they love aviation, most are pilots, and they will do all they can to answer your questions.

Well, that turned out a lot longer than I thought it would. Soooooo, in other words, I liked the program. If you have a tough time being motivated, don't do it. If you want an easy degree without doing much, you can do it, but you'll cheat yourself. If you can be motivated, then you'll probably have a good time with it.

Let me know if that is what you are looking for. If you haven't noticed, I tend to blab about nothing specific, so let me know if you have any more questions

How long did it take you to complete the program? Did you get your Bachelors Degree? I looked at their web site, seems like a nice place and with the price of 130 per credit hour it is a deal.

Thanks for the Info
Tom
