When I came in the Navy back in '88 they didn't exactly push the GI bill and since I was making next to nothing anyway I declined it. Does anyone know of a way to get into it 15 years after the fact? That would be a dream come true.

i think there is a way althought i do not know the details. check with the va rep at your post/base.

are you still on active duty?

Yeah, I was going to ask that question as well, are you active duty? You can always go to the Career Counselor. office & ask them for help?

I'm certain that things have changed in 10 1/2 years, but when I left active duty in late '92, I was offered the option of funding VEAP with a lump sum contribution. Then, it was $1200.

There were also other options available, which were based on date of entry into the service and what specific programs were available to service members on those dates.

I'd bet that some similar policy still exists. A competent Education Officer or Career Counselor should be able to point you in the right direction.

Yes, a few phone calls should put you in touch with the right person to let you know if you might get the Bill retroactively. I know some of my squadron mates were able to get funded because the signed form declining the bill was not in their records, and they paid a lump of $1200 to get it. I had the signed form, and did not feel right trying to fight it (some have gotten it this way).

Another way to get it is as a Selected Reservist, which I found great news as I entered a reserve unit. I got it without paying a cent, only had to agree to a few years of service in the Reserve... but don't know if this could apply to you. Good luck!

Looks like I may be SOL unless I can find a back door. Jolly Roger what record is that form in? How do I know if they have it? Now that I am an Officer we have no service records anymore. Wonder how to check that.

Anyway here is what our Career Counselor had to say.

Sir,

Unfortunately, there is no second chance. For the MGIB, the default option is to automatically enroll those who are eligible and take their $100 per month for 12 months. If they declined the MGIB, then they had to make a deliberate choice to decline it. If someone declined, they are unfortunately out in the cold regarding the MGIB.
