Northwest Airlink May Suffer Pilot Strike

Work stoppage would end NWA service to over one hundred cities

WASHINGTON, D.C. --- The Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) announced today that Mesaba Airlines pilots have overwhelmingly authorized a strike should union leaders call for a work stoppage at one of the nation’s largest regional airlines. The pilots voted 98 percent in favor of a strike.

"Our goal is a fair and equitable contract, not a strike," said Captain Tom Wychor, chairman of the Mesaba unit of ALPA. "The bargaining process needs a deadline so that we can achieve this goal."

The pilots agreed to a concessionary contract in 1996, saving the company more than $10 million in labor costs to date. Starting salaries for Mesaba pilots, who operate both jet and turboprop airliners, is less than $17,000 per year. After three years that salary is only $24,000.

Contract negotiations between Mesaba and ALPA commenced in June of 2001, and have been federally mediated since August 2002. Remaining open issues include compensation, job security, work rules and retirement.

"Our pilots have sent a clear and bold message to management today," said Wychor. "If we can’t come to terms with management on a new agreement that recognizes our contributions to this company, our pilots are prepared to strike."

The pilots will need approval from the National Mediation Board (NMB), the government agency that oversees airline and railroad labor disputes, to wage a strike. ALPA has already requested a release from mediation, which would result in a 30-day cooling off period before pilots could strike. The NMB has not yet made a formal response to the request.

Mesaba Airlines, a subsidiary of MAIR Holdings, Inc., operates as a "Northwest Airlink" partner for Minneapolis-based Northwest Airlines. Mesaba operates over 800 daily departures from the mainline hubs of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Detroit, and Memphis to smaller "spoke" cities. Mesaba pilots safely transported 460,018 passengers to and from Northwest Airlines cities last month alone.

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilot union representing 66,000 pilots at 42 airlines in the U.S. and Canada. Visit the ALPA Web site at http://www.alpa.org.

How many pilots does Mesaba employ?

844 pilots as of 10/20/03

and 98% of us are willing to walk for a fair contract.

watch and learn Mesa.

p.s. Were still making money 3.9 million for the qtr, time for us pilots to see some of it. MAIR= measaba and bigsky

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, Oct 28, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- MAIR Holdings, Inc. ( MAIR ) today reported earnings for the fiscal 2004 second quarter ended September 30, 2003 of $3.9 million, or $0.19 per basic and fully diluted share, compared with $2.4 million, or $0.12 per basic and fully diluted share, in the comparable fiscal 2003 period. The company's second quarter results represented a 65.9 percent year-over-year increase in earnings and exceeded current consensus estimates of $0.11 per share.

TO: Any Striking Mesaba Pilot

Where can other pilots send donations to your group if you strike.

Mesaba2425 = is probably management.

I believe that (along with his identity) has already been exposed on this board.

I guess he thinks we are all idiots and don't remember. Ignore everything he has to say. Here and elsewhere. A person such as this deserves NO respect anywhere.

It's probably not HARD to figure out how he got his current position.

First off, I would like to say how proud I am to be counted amongst this group of pilots. Today we sent an obvious message to management; we are committed to a leading contract and we support our negotiating committee and our MEC. The fact that a reported 97% of the pilots voted and 98% percent voted infavor of authorizing a strike shows this support for our MEC.

To those of you offering your support, thank you. For BLWME, thanks. I am not sure where to point you, but I would suggest www.alpa.org or our SPC site at www.mesabapilots.alpa.org.

For 2425, you have shown your true colors once again, and you are a jacka$$. A strike is not the goal, and to post a link like that discredits and insults the pilots at this airline that are trying to make a decent living while they provide the top-notch service our management likes to brag about. This company keeps making money because of the great rank and file employees and despite the lack of leadership from our SLT.

Perhaps this should be a wake up call to all of you over on Blue Gentian. We are behind our MEC, we deserve a good contract, and we are willing to do what it takes. We will not be another mesa. We will not be swayed from our goals by NWA and thier tactics.

Good luck guys! I never got to wear my Mesaba hat as a line pilot, but I do know how small those "apprentice" paychecks were. I hope the best for you all.

I post this quote only to point out that this is where the system seems to be broke.

I hope for your groups sake that if an impasse has been reached, then the NMB will step out of the way and allow you your right to impose economic hurt (aka strike).. Talk to a Laker about this... probably a half dozen request for release of the past 4yrs of mediation (100% strike vote) By doing this the NMB fails to allow the seriousness of this to be recognized!! If an agreement can't be reached the labor group will soon be released from the table and allowed to strike!! So lets reach an agreement ASAP!! At Lakes its a laugh to them, the pilots ask for release and all it means to mgt is more time for them with the old contract..

Come on NMB quit disrupting the negotiation process!! If these groups are at an impasse and have asked for release, then release them from the table!

Good luck Mesaba.. lead the way!

Nope. Not in management. Never have been.

It's about **CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED****CENSORED** time a pilot group stands up for itself!!!!!!

Show Mesa and Duane how it should've been done

You guys/gals have got some giant ones!!

I will happily pay into any strike benefits for you guys.

Don't worry about who mesaba2425 is. just ignore him. We already know where he stands on these issues and it's not worth wasting your time over it.

Mesaba management has just been PUNK'D!

I'll keep watching the ALPA website and gladly walk the pavement with you guys. Just let me know who to contact.

You have our support at ASA. What will replace the BAE 146's?

I just wanted to say thanks for all the support from those of you at ACA, Comair, ASA, Air Wis, Pinnacle, CoEx, Skywest, etc. It means a lot to us now to know that you all are behind us.

Thanks!

As for what's going to replace the AVRO's...it's anyone's guess.

Stay tuned...it's going to get interesting.
