I'm planning on travelling to Australia (Melbourne- YMML) in November to attend a wedding. the travel agent that I'm working with is recommending UA, they have a direct LAX-YMML flight using the 744. The open-ended question : Any new news on the future of UAL, if I do go buy this ticket? The alternative is Qantas (QF), but I'd rather fly on a US carrier (UA is the only US carrier flying to Australia). I see that UAL is due to re-emerge from protection in October.

I'd fly my C172 down there, but there aren't enough stepping stones in the big pond!

Thanks,

Bruce.

I like 172 idea :)

Just Tanker her up. and do the following.

CA to Hawaii 2170 NM 15 hours
Hawaii to Am Samoa 2257 NM 15 hours
Am Samoa to NZ 1558 NM 11 hours
NZ to Australia 1427 NM 10 hours

(More information than needed but I’m bored)

TIP:
If you do this remember to file a flight plan no matter what in AUS because of the airspace reform. If you do not file a plan you will be denied entry into class C, because you did not put any money into the system .

SIDENOTE:

We don’t need this in the US, it will be a blow to GA. I read some place on the web some of the horror stories happening because of this system so far. A Austria CFI and student were happily flying VFR under 3.500 ft when a airliner dropped through the clouds right in front of them. The airliner was IMC but flying VFR trying to save money.

LOL !! I wonder just how slow those KC tankers can fly, and if the FAA would care if I installed an in-flight refueling receptacle through the prop spinner! :)

Thanks for the humor, and some good pointers on airspace.

Bruce.
