2012,2013. Who cares. It is coming one day. I think our CEO has enough going on right now with connecting the dots with the combination of us and Air Tran. The future is bright in regards to additional destinations in the future. So, what difference does a year make? Time flies!

I told you guys this months ago. Look for TWO years AFTER they begin the ETOPS application process.

It may be two years before the ETOPS flights begin, but it won't take two years for the approval process.

It took Alaska 720 days form the first application until approval. The toughest part of the process is getting the maintenance department certified.

SWA has had their share of maintenance issues recently, have they not? Leaving aside the recent hull failure, there are the numerous fines they've had to pay for ignoring ADs. Not critical, mind you, because it happens everywhere to some degree.

But SWA has a LOT of housecleaning to do before ETOPS is granted. My estimate of two years may be a little low.

All I have to compare it to is how quickly we had approval at RD. No where near two years and we didn't have half the resources avail here at SWA. My estimate is that we'll have to run the -800s on domestic routes for around six months before proving runs in the Fall of 2012.

You're right, may just need to completely wipe the mx dept out and start over. Bring in some folks from every other major carrier that has gotten approval with some "maintenance issues" to show us the way. ;)

FUBI, our process took 2 years partly because halfway through the process, the FAA decided to suggest some serious changes to the ETOPS rules. Waiting for the dust to settle took awhile and if the decisions had gone another way, we wouldn't be flying HI at all.

See, even when we aren't reinventing the wheel, we get to participate in someone else's committee to do the same.

Viva la Humboldt!
