As seen in the Detroit Free Press today, a former Willow Run 135 cargo pilot with only three years of college, has become a multi-millionaire. How did he do it? He got laid off in the mid 70's, went to work in closing mortgages, then became a mortgage broker, got into the start of the internet mortgage boom, started his own company. See you don't need a college degree to make outside of flying either.

pilotyip,

It's nice to hear that you can still ahead in this country without the "obligatory" college degree. Far too long people are indoctrinated with the tired old mantra of go to school get your degree and a good paying job will be yours for the picking.

The value of a college degree in my opinion is devalued simply because at least for those in the flying profession are concerned, at least 90%(possibly higher) of major airline applicants have one.

So with that in mind why do people get the degree? simple-because everybody else has one! I would be interested to hear from anyone who can say honestly that obtaining their degree made them a better and more knowledgable pilot, rather than the real motive of "I won't get an interview without it" which is probably true.

I certainly understand and agree that a degree will be a good fall back for a career outside of flying, but even in other job fields its value has truly diminished so people now take the next step up the academic "arms race" and get a Masters, where will it end?

HILLBILLY BOB! (the toothless guy..)

I heard he also flies an old beat up Falcon 20 at night .....???

heck-of-a-good stick that Hillbilly is...

college wolf! Wolf!

All I have to do is put the word college in a thread and I can get a Pavlov’s dog response from the Corp guru's. We do spend too much time grading a person by their degree and not by their happiness, ability, or accomplishments. You guy's are so easy to predict, nothing solid just a few remarks about those low life people who do not have degrees. The ease of getting a degree today I believe has actually lead to the dumbing down of the US and our fall from world leadership in the sciences and engineering.

For only 3 years of college this guys IS pretty smart... Notice it says "Former" Willow Run Cargo Pilot... The guy realized the road he was heading down and got himself a new gig! He didn't want to end up old and bitter... Bravo to this chap!

could be

Could be he made a great career choice and stayed out of a flying career. He proved he was more than a commodity that could make take offs and landings in pairs.

Of course Hillbilly Bob (remember our "toof-less" friend?) did the same thing by dropping a Fiver at the Mini-Mart and now he is a millionaire too (even though he can't spell it)!

A six of Bud, pack of marlboros, and a dream man....thats all it takes..
