I could be wrong, but I believe it comes from the shorthand of Mach .86, where .86 refers to velocity compared to the local speed of sound. The speed .86 would, therefore, be equivalent to 86% the local speed of sound.

...I crack myself up.

Very good but it could also refer to a military vehicle. For example a M.88 is a tracked wrecker. That thing that they used to pull down the statue or Sadam in Iraq. I was on an M.109A6 but you guys wouldn’t know what that is either.

You could be right but I was just checking.

You'd be surprised to find out what the people here know, howitzer boy.

Just a wild guess here, but that wouldn't be a self-propelled Howitzer of the 155MM species, would it?

As a matter of fact it is. Self Propelled. “Paladin”. Emplaces itself. The Chinese stole the software and built their own self emplacing gun.

The folks in the terminal frequently ask me what I flew in the service. I respond gleefully with “Paladins”. They usually search deep through their brain in absolute confusion and then respond with “O that’s great” and then wonder off in confusion mumbling to themselves thinking that a Paladin must be an airplane.

There’s one with the CAT (Ammunition carrier) behind it.

Cluster bombs, Illumination, Smoke, High Explosive, White Phosphorus, Copper Head (Laser Guided), and Land Mines (Anti Armor and Anti Personnel). 25 Miles and O boy is it accurate.

The sad part is that they are all parked in the U.S.A. and the fine Redlegs who man them are on foot kicking in doors in Iraq.

Ahhhh, the military days.

I served on LSD-42 (USS Germantown). I was a AN/SLQ-32(V2) Technician. I also worked on the AN/ULQ-16. My watch station was in CIC and worked with the OS's. My EW1 (SW) was a prick. My EWC was cool and made me a WCS. That was the life. Many times the OOW would ask me if I knew where the Dubuque was and I would find the radar with a PRF of 1795 and tell him it was bearing 270 degrees. It was easy to hulltech the ARG ESM as we had it on file in a EOB. We didn't have any ECM capability, just SRBOC and Flares.

The MS's made good chow and the SM's were cool too. I used to play the "animal" game with a few friends of mine where we would name animals on the ship. We had the crows nest, rat tail, rat nest, pelican hooks, door dogs, foxtail, monkey fist, super stallion, thunder bird, monkey cum, Aft Crane, Elephant ears, bull nose, bulls eye, dog wrench and much more. Once my CO asked the OOD to tell the CICWO to get the DRT operator to figure out the CPA of skunk "U". It was CBDR!!! That was an eventful watch.

....anyway, ah....the military days.

"Sir, if the VP is such a VIP, shouldn't we keep the PC on the QT because if the VC find out, we could all be put on KP." From memory but it's close....
