How does your vacation policy work? Are you required to take an entire week at a time or will the company relieve you if you only need 1 or 2 days off in the middle of your rotation. It seems to be inefficient from the company's perspective to airline a new crew member out to relieve you just for one day, but at the same time it would kinda suck to have to use an entire week of vacation when all you really need is one day off. Just wondering what you've been able to negotiate.

Thanks,

T

Vacations are covered in Section 8 and Section 19 of the CBA: http://www.ibt1108.org/01 PILOTCBA November 21, 2005.pdf

Basically it's a one-week vacation at a time if you are on the 7/7 schedule, which amounts to a 3-week-off period for each 7-day vacation. It works a bit differently on the 18-day (reserve) schedule but the min time off for that schedule is 15 days. The vacation period runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year.

Should you need a day or two off in the middle of trip, you'd have to talk to at least an assistant chief pilot to even get that ball rolling. It is possible to sometimes get a few unpaid days off, but it takes a compelling circumstance. Of course, depending on where those days are needed in a tour, some people might recommend a sick call.

Vacation bidding is a bit of a pain in the butt because the bids are due by March for the entire July to June schedule so I hope you know what you are doing for the next year by then.

Simple bid system, every 3 months I take a min of 21 days off...

O yea, if you come to work at NJA please don't bitch about the commute- read the work rules.

Easy for the home-based guy to say! ;)

It really amounts to a B-scale, and it's a legitimate issue for those hired under the new contract. That said, I keep it to myself unless asked, because I was under no illusions going into it. Plus, there's a lot that I really like about the current contract, and those good points are the reason I'm here.

Still, it's high on my list of concerns for the next round of negotiations; I'll just enjoy the good parts until then.

Wilco! I'm actually pretty happy where I'm at. We have a similar schedule to yours, though as of now we don't have a formal vacation policy. I'm just looking for ideas of how we could get it implemented.

Thanks for all the responses! Glad to see legit questions can still get legit answers.
