To all Pilots, Flight Attendants, and Flight Operations’ Team Members

A very Happy New Year to all. We have reason to be optimistic – 2006 promises to be a banner year for Flight Options. In the Flight Operations arena we can expect many changes, many improvements. Our VP for Flight Operations, Bob Tyler, has asked me to send an end-of-year message to our crewmembers and department. This is a great opportunity to communicate directly with our flight operations people from a training perspective.

Over the past couple of years you have all seen our aircrew training programs blossom. That growth has taken root in a simple, fundamental philosophy – “we are here to support our crewmembers.” We provide relevant information, required and nice-to-know, to help you do your jobs better. We do this with facilitated, scenario-based training on a need-to-know basis, incorporating elements of CRM and human factors. Furthermore, training ought to be interesting and fun, not boring and a drudgery. We hope your annual training is a change of pace you look forward to each year.

Our end goal? As the number one bullet in our company credo says, SAFETY. As aircrew members, we all know that we operate in a “no mistakes” environment. A recent job-risk poll listed “aircrew” as one of the top high-risk jobs in the world. Let’s face it; you work in a dangerous occupation. We cannot afford mistakes; the consequences are too high for us, for our families, for our owners, and for our company.

The Flight Options’ Training instructors that you see in our classroom at DFW are our company experts on the entire spectrum of academic and operational topics. Your instructors are D. Boedigheimer, C. Fisher, J.Frazier, C. Guillem, Brent Harwood, R. Phillips, and T. Wallace. J. Rybicki teaches our new-hires at CGF. These are the only members of Flight Options that each one of you may see, face-to-face, over the next year. Our instructors carry a tremendous responsibility and an important message in that presence.

We must remember that classroom training is not the only function of Training. We also support our crews from Cuyahoga County. This support comes from professional and dedicated Training folks you know primarily on the phone. Their jobs, names, and numbers are:

Aircrew Records, K.Parker and B. Peters
Aircrew Scheduling, L. Cash
Sim/Tng Scheduling, M.Wason
Tng Technologist, M. Ickes
Aircrew Uniforms/Support, B. Elwell
OCC Training, J.Kosak

Courseware development and special projects are handled by P.Taylor, J.Brockmann, and E. Needham. Each of these members of the Training Dept are here for one reason – “to support our crewmembers.” We remain dedicated and focused on that commitment.

Beginning in February 2006, you will see a new corporate training program at DFW – Service Initiative Training. This training is promoting a positive cultural shift in our company. It is designed to improve how we treat our customers, both internal and external. We already know that our aircrew members are recognized as the industry’s best. Owner feedback sends the message loud-and-clear, our crews are great. In many cases our crews are the reason our owners are with us. Excellent work pilots and flight attendants!

But the cultural initiative training fosters equally good treatment between all of us as team members. We ask that you embrace this new approach, give it a chance, and let it help us improve our workplace. If we give this a shot, we should begin to see positive results immediately.

A special word about OCC training. We are well aware that the OCC directly impacts our aircrew quality of life each day. The implications on our operations cannot be overstated. Training within the OCC is one of the steps vital in transforming the relationships between the OCC and our aircrews. We take this responsibility seriously. You can be guaranteed that training within the OCC is designed to show positive results in the efficiency and effectiveness of our operations, as well as an improved quality of life for our crewmembers. We have a lot of work to do in this area. We will not rest until we have seen direct, measurable results. One of our most credible indicators that we are making progress is feedback from our internal customers -- you, the aircrew members. Please let me, or any member of the Flight Operations Training Department, know exactly how we are doing – good or bad – no repercussions, honest feedback. It’s the primary way we will all get better.

Please remember, we are here for one reason – support our 850-plus aircrew members and the flight operations support people in the OCC.

Once again, a very Happy New Year to you and your families. Let’s work toward a prosperous new year for our families and a productive new year for our company.

Rick Fuller
Director, Flight Operations Training

PS – this is a late breaking addition direct from Bob Tyler –
We’ve made considerable progress in developing our new comprehensive pay, domicile, and quality of life plan for all crewmembers. More work need to be done. Our guiding aim is to provide each of you compensation comparable to others in our business while remaining true to our business plan. Additionally, we must assure we’ll have a secure place to work both now and for years to come. We intend to announce the Flight Operations’ plan no later than Tuesday, January 31, 2006. Thanks again for your many suggestions and your continued support.
