New Landing System Upgrades Airport at DHL U.S. Hub
DHL Facility Cleared for Landings in All Weather Conditions
Wed, Feb 2, 2005
PLANTATION, FL - February 2, 2005/DHL, the world's leading global express delivery and logistics company, announced today it has introduced a new landing system at its U.S. hub airport facility in Wilmington, Ohio.Ý The new Category III Instrument Landing System (ILS) gives Category III certified aircraft the ability to land in conditions of reduced visibility, improving on-time reliability, safety, and the timeliness of air shipments.
DHL's Wilmington Air Park includes over 2,200 acres of grounds, ramps, buildings and two parallel runways. Over 240 arrivals and departures take place at the airport during each day and night of operations.
The new Cat III ILS allows pilots in Cat III certified aircraft to land in Wilmington with as little as 600 feet of forward visibility, or "runway visual range" - half the visibility requirement of the airport's previous Cat II certification. Additionally, the Cat III ILS allows a pilot to land an aircraft with no visual clarity of the runway when forward visibility requirements are met.Ý With the new system, the ILS equipment on the ground sends signals to the equipment in the aircraft to guide it to the proper place on the runway for a safe landing.Ý Category III ILS allows pilots to land in 99.9% of situations that lead to poor visibility.
"We have successfully tested the new Category III ILS system and are pleased that the aircraft serving our network now have the ability to land at our hub airport in Wilmington in some of the most severe conditions," said Fred Beljaars, executive vice president of operations for DHL.Ý "Regardless of the weather situation, the upgraded Cat III system will improve our ability to operate in all conditions, with increased reliability through our expanded U.S. delivery network."
The Federal Aviation Administration requires airports and aircraft operating under Cat III to be properly certified for eligibility in the program.Ý Flight operations in the U.S. are provided to the DHL network through an ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance) contract and a Hub and Linehaul Services Agreement.Ý
Aircraft operated for DHL in Wilmington by ABX Air, Inc. will now be able to land at lower runway visibility and in a variety of weather conditions through the use of special aircraft instrumentation calibrations and enhanced ground based antenna systems. Special flight crew training has also been performed with all flight crew of Cat III enabled aircraft in Wilmington.
Currently, all Boeing 767 aircraft operating for DHL are Cat III equipped.Ý These Cat III equipped aircraft are able to land at Cat III enabled airports in major markets around the country.
