Has anyone noticed the "new" type of taxiway lights being installed at airports recently? They seem to be either of the LED or flourescent type. Does anyone find them distracting? To me, they seem to leave a "trail" behind them as I move my eyes and I find them annoying. I only hope they don't replace the incandescent lights on the runway with this new type. Comments?

Saw the LED taxiway lighting in OKC and ATL. Not any brighter overall, but more concentrated and deeper blue in color. Doesn't cause any visual problems for me, and it seems to make them more distinguishable from runway and other lighting. The concentration of light from the LED can be distracting, much like new cars that are going from incandescent to LED brake lamps.

At least you have taxiway lights. When I was your age, we used burning matchbooks and colored paper. And we were grateful...

...and you had to pull the airplane uphill both ways, by hand, through chest-deep snow to get it to and from the tiedowns? ;)

Fly safe!

We have the LEDs here at PRC. I do like them, mostly because they're a replacement for the blue reflectors that used to be here on one of the taxiways. They aren't distracting or overly bright when the tower is operating, since they're nice enough to have them turned down to the lowest setting. The only real issue is when the tower closes, we have some pilots around here (on severe clear nights, 50+ sm vis even) who just love to turn them up to 7 clicks. If I'm taxiing, I feel like I'm going to get a suntan from how bright they are. :p
