Just get the 1st Class. If any pilot out there can't pass a United States Class 1 Medical... well... maybe it's time to consider something else to do.

Well, you made me go dig up my FOM and my new contract.

FOM page p1-23. (dated 20 APR 07) ....bottom of the page there is a note...

NOTE: ...each crewmember must maintain a First Class medical certificate....

Contract p220 (the new IBB contract) 25.1 states...

...each crewmember must maintain a First Class Medical Certificate. ...

According to both the FOM and the Contract, each crewmember must maintain a first class medical. I understand that as both PICs and SICs.

And like I said, the company has reimbursed me on each one, without question.

Not seeing the note you are referring to, but I do See 1.11.4 First officer

"crew members with the current duty assignment of first officer are required to comply with provisions of fom 1.11.1 above. For the purposes of medical certificate renewal, First officers medical certificates may lapse to second class privileges after six months following issuance. After 12 months beyond the date of issuance first officers shall maintain a medical in accordance with the requirements of far 61.23

clear as mud,

from what i can read first class is required when issued i.e-at the doctors office, but it may lapse to second class from months 6-12

25.4 Holding of Second Class Medical Certificate

A crewmember who fails to qualify for his First Class Medical Certificate, but who is able to qualify
for a Second Class Medical Certificate may fly as a First Officer and be paid in accordance with the
appropriate First Officer wage scale set forth in Section 27. A crewmember who is receiving
Captain’s pay at the time he lost his First Class Medical will have his Captain’s pay reinstated
effective the first duty day associated with Captain requalification training.

Thanks for all the posts - I'm clearly not as young as some of you and a First Class is getting to be a bit of a pain.

thanks

Also, just so you know, it's required to have a current 1st class medical for the interview too. From the application accepted e-mail:
We will contact you when you are selected for a future interview date.
When you are granted an interview you must possess and present a First Class Medical that is within the first 6 months of the date issued (ATP/PIC privileges in effect).

Please provide us with any changes in employment.
